Chapter One
Princess Zayla, ten-year-old twin sister of Prince Zincor, ruler of Zoron, sat at her bedroom window in the palace and stared impatiently into space. She had nothing to do until the time came for her to use the Tappa Ray. Before her brother left, she insisted that he and Bazel, the ancient, trusted councilor of her late father, teach her how to use it. It caused a big argument, but she won. Her brother had been gone for three days, and she felt bored. She wouldn’t be for much longer, though, she hoped. Soon, she would give the third signal to Earth, and Mark Foy would be with her—if he’d been paying attention. According to the agreement they’d made, Mark would look for the quick, green burst of the Tappa Ray signal every night at the moment of moonrise, and on the third night of signaling, the Tappa Ray would pluck him from his bedroom window. Instantly, in a green fog with the sound of a thousand bees buzzing in his ear, he’d be transported into the dimension between Earth and its moon and be plopped down on the cold stone floor of the Tappa Ray laboratory.
Zayla hoped with all her heart that Mark would be ready and willing to make the trip—she looked at the clock on her bedroom wall—in two hours. Zincor went off adventuring, and she had to stay at home, but being a princess, she simply could not go out into the streets to play like the other children of Zoron. Oh, no, what a terrible thing that would be. Zayla frowned, made a fist, smacked the windowsill, and took another glance at the clock.

Mark Foy also sat at his bedroom window. He’d seen the first two signals from Zoron and eagerly awaited the third. He checked his watch. It wouldn’t be long now. He’d be glad to see Prince Zincor again. It had been a while, almost two months, since he’d last been on Zoron to help Zincor deal with Blaylock, his evil uncle, who wanted his nephew out of the way so he could rule Zoron; and Fentar, a brilliant scientist and inventor of the Tappa Ray, Blaylock’s equally evil sidekick.
Mark wondered why Zincor wanted him back. He hoped it was simply for a visit and not because Blaylock and Fentar had returned from the mountains where they escaped to last time. He kind of hoped the prince wanted
