Preface
This may seem like an odd title for a book, but being a boomer myself and having experienced life in the church in the U S for the last 30 years or so, I think it can be a challenging question. My experience may be somewhat limited to cover such a broad topic as this, but I would like to offer a challenge to my generation to consider our impact on the church both present and on into the future. As a layman who has served in many roles within the church, I can probably relate to many of you who have had similar experiences, both positive and some that were not so compelling let’s say.
If you are looking for a dynamic treatise, this is definitely not it. My hope is that you can focus on some of the concerns that I will address from my humble perspective, and I want to stay as close as possible to the message and examples we have been provided in the scriptures to offer some challenges to my fellow boomers. If you are looking for a fun read, this isn’t it by a stretch.
The Boomer Wave
I am sure that we all know by now that the boomer generation consists of that 70+ million people group born between the years 1946 to 1964. I am an early boomer and have had the pleasure or not, of experiencing the many changes brought about by this unique generation. We have been labeled many things, some good and some not so good, as some have seen us as a self- orientated cultural group bringing about change in many aspects of our nation, including our own brand of what the church should look like and focus on. And so now I would like to highlight some of my concerns with the church as we have influenced it to meet our needs and expectations.
Chapter 1
Some Of My Concerns
Jesus Flakes
This is a play on words from the Jesus freak movement that took place in the late sixties and early seventies. Definitely part of the boomer wave for sure. But I want to look at this from a different perspective. Why I am choosing to use flakes instead, relates to all of the church and denominational hopping that our generation seems to have engaged in over the last 30 years or so.
Just so you don’t think I am pointing fingers; my wife calls us Chatho-Congo-non denoma-Baptists. Which lays out the path we traveled in our journey, coming to Christ in our thirties. We had to learn that not all teaching is biblical. I also know there are a good number of boomers who stayed true to their church and/or denomination. What I am saying is that we have had
