    Dedication

This book is dedicated to the three most important people in my life.

My late father for being a humble human being and being obsessed with my well-being.

My mom for all the love, care, motivation and being the anchor of my life. Your statement - Agar ache din nahi rahe toh bure din bhi nahi rahenge (If the good times are transient, the bad ones too shall pass) always kept me going in life and made me what I am today!

Third is the first and last love of my life, also a bundle of my joy, motivation and the only one who means the world to me, my son Girik J Gupta.

    About the book

There is a famous saying, Forget the past if it is hurtful. You must be familiar with this phrase as either your friends, family, or teachers might have said this to you at some point in life. What we may have not realised is that human beings are meaning-making machines. As children, we often experience events or see things that define what you believe about the world and form our belief system. One might forget the past; however, the meanings those incidents create in our growing age lead to a deep dent in adulthood. It may be indicated by difficulties in emotional regulation, consciousness, and memory, self-perception, distorted perceptions of the perpetrators of abuse, problems in relationships with other people, and adverse effects on the meaningfulness of life.

This is what happened to one of my clients from my coaching programme. Kabir grew up in a dysfunctional family and had a troubled childhood that not only took away the innocence of his growing up years, but also contributed to his adulthood failures. As he grew older, he struggled to maintain relationships with friends, love partners, peers, and superiors & felt a sense of incompleteness in the relationship with his parents. He was stuck in his career with no goal in life and was going through trouble in his marriage. Kabir was living a life full of frustration, incompleteness, and unhappiness.

There is a famous metaphor: If one is caught in the heavy rain, it’s nearly impossible to stay dry. Similarly, it is hard not to get caught up in the challenges and negative situations of the world. No one had ever guaranteed that life would be hunky-dory; however, Pain or Gain is a personal choice. Allanah Hunt rightly said that ‘It is only when you take responsibility for your life that you discover how powerful you truly are.’

Kabir realised that there was something missing in his life, and he needed help to find the purpose of his life. The first step towards happiness is taking responsibility for it and reaching out to someone when you need help. While listening to his childhood stories, I could relate them with a few of my childhood memories, particularly, the similarity of circumstances of our fathers’ demise. I realised that what Kabir & I had experienced in our individual lives was not rare. The pain that Kabir and so many of you must be living with made me decide to write this book and help you to overcome the dark childhood that is holding you back in many areas of your life. I must share that I re-lived a few moments that took me into my lower emotional state and, in fact, broke me down many times during the journey of writing this manuscript.

This book shall unfold the significant incidents from Kabir’s childhood, like- sexual abuse, bullying, poor academic performance, etc. that shaped his personality and formed his belief system. It will take you through the journey of a childhood where one incident led to the other and caused disruption throughout his toddlerhood and after that.

What to expect from the book?

Everyone: You may find your story in this book and remind you that shit happens in life, and that this is just the pattern life follows. It was not your fault in whatever happened with you. Even if you don’t find your story in this book, you might be able to relate to some of the incidents from your life that are holding you back. The book shall guide you on releasing any pain, guilt, or discomfort you might be carrying from your childhood. It will nudge you to take responsibility for overcoming your limiting beliefs; to evoke self-belief and achieve massive success in all areas of life.

Parents, To-be Parents, Guardians, Teachers: This book should act as an alert manual for you and awaken the much-needed consciousness in your respective role. It shall navigate you on how to control the probable damages that a lousy childhood could cause and prepare the children to score high in the most critical subject, called life. Your role has a massive responsibility in saving probable damages to many lives. You can help raise happy human beings, loving spouses, and conscious parents, which is way beyond the cliché of scoring high in academic subjects.

    Note:

    • To be sensitive toward the secrets I am about to share, I have changed the name of the client and other characters in the story, along with the names of places.

    • I have done my best to pen down the feelings in every chapter the way Kabir expressed during his coaching sessions.

    • Though the clients do not have to share their past incidents in such detail, it was Kabir’s choice to do so.

Rick Warren so wisely said, We are products of our past, but we don’t have to be prisoners of it. With this thought, let us begin the journey of breaking free from the dark memories that imprisoned us and take ownership to transform our lives.
