    9 Lessons in Sacrifice, Self-Preservation, and Servant Leadership

    My mother, Mrs. Leaster Joyce Robinson-Fonville, was the first woman I saw as a servant leader in my community. I watched and unknowingly took notes every day on how she carried herself and on how it looked and what it meant to be a strong and well-rounded woman in a variety of circumstances. I wanted to be just like her, but with my own special seasoning. I had no clue while under her roof that her mentoring, coaching, discipline, and counseling would last well into my adulthood molding me into who I am today. I am beyond grateful that she is the vessel through whom God chose for me to come. I can vividly remember the day my life made a significant shift. I had to be about 11 years old. It was a few days before Thanksgiving when my mother came home very enthusiastic from work and said that we would be going to the neighborhood hospital to help prepare baskets for the needy. She pulled me in close and explained that we must be conscious of how blessed we were and the importance of helping others who were not as fortunate.
