The Biblical Account of Abraham’s Trial with Isaac

And it came to pass after these things, that God did tempt Abraham, and said unto him, Abraham: and he said, Behold, here I am.

And he said, Take now thy son, thine only son Isaac, whom thou lovest, and get thee into the land of Moriah; and offer him there for a burnt offering upon one of the mountains which I will tell thee of.

And Abraham rose up early in the morning, and saddled his ass, and took two of his young men with him, and Isaac his son, and clave the wood for the burnt offering, and rose up, and went unto the place of which God had told him.

Then on the third day Abraham lifted up his eyes, and saw the place afar off.

And Abraham said unto his young men, Abide ye here with the ass; and I and the lad will go yonder and worship, and come again to you.

And Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering, and laid it upon Isaac his son; and he took the fire in his hand, and a knife; and they went both of them together.

And Isaac spake unto Abraham his father, and said, My father: and he said, Here am I, my son. And he said, Behold the fire and the wood: but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?

And Abraham said, My son, God will provide himself a lamb for a burnt offering: so they went both of them together.

And they came to the place which God had told him of; and Abraham built an altar there, and laid the wood in order, and bound Isaac his son, and laid him on the altar upon the wood.

And Abraham stretched forth his hand, and took the knife to slay his son.

And the angel of the Lord called unto him out of heaven, and said, Abraham, Abraham: and he said, Here am I.

And he said, Lay not thine hand upon the lad, neither do thou anything unto him: for now I know that thou fearest God, seeing thou hast not withheld thy son, thine only son from me.

And Abraham lifted up his eyes, and looked and behold behind him a ram caught in a thicket by his horns: and Abraham went and took the ram, and offered him up for a burnt offering in the stead of his son.

And Abraham called the name of that place Jehovah-jireh: as it is said to this day, In the mount of the LORD it shall be seen.

And the angel of the LORD called unto Abraham out of heaven the second time,

And said, By myself have I sworn saith the LORD, for because thou hast done this thing, and hast not withheld thy son, thine only son:

    That in blessing I will bless thee, and in multiplying I will multiply thy seed as the stars of the heaven, and as the sand which is upon the sea shore; and thy seed shall possess the gate of his enemies;

And in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed; because thou hast obeyed my voice.

So Abraham returned unto his young men, and they rose up and went together to Beersheba; and Abraham dwelt at Beersheba.

And It Came to Pass after What Things?

"And it came to pass after these things, that God did tempt Abraham, and said unto him, Abraham: and he said, Behold, here I am" (Genesis 22:1, emphasis added).

And it came to pass after what things? The answer to this question begins further back in Genesis. It includes the details of Abraham’s life up until the time God commands Abraham to offer his son Isaac for a burnt offering.

If we look further back in Genesis at "these things," it will help us understand Abraham’s background and his relationship with the Lord at the time that God did tempt him. It will allow us to witness some of the things that have occurred in Abraham’s life. It will allow us to see his dedication to God early on. It will allow us to see how God viewed Abraham and how Abraham viewed God, even before God tempted him. It will allow us to see the character of Abraham, as well as God’s character, played out in Abraham’s life.

Prior to this trial of Abraham’s, Abraham had gotten to know the God that he was serving, and certainly, God knew Abraham that was serving Him. It is evident that an assessment of each other had been established before God ever called Abraham’s name to test him. For example, the book of Genesis shows one of the ways the Lord viewed Abraham even before his trial, For I know him, that he will command his children and his household after him, and they shall keep the way of the LORD, to do justice and judgment; that the LORD may bring upon Abraham that which he hath spoken of him (Genesis 18:19). Likewise, there is also a great example in Genesis of how Abraham viewed God, And he believed in the LORD; and he counted it to him for righteousness (Genesis 15:6). Whatever God said, Abraham just believed Him.

Reviewing further back in Abraham’s life will allow us to see how his past relationship with God can have such a profound impact in this future trial with Isaac. We will see how his past dependence on God throughout his life is further carried into his trial with Isaac. Abraham’s past carries a lot of weight going into this future trial with Isaac. Abraham’s past is where and when he got to know God and see God’s hand in his life early on. Therefore, it is advantageous for us to look at Abraham’s background or to do a background check on him before viewing his upcoming trial with Isaac.

Abraham’s past lifestyle and relationship with God is a screen we should look through to view his upcoming trial with Isaac. This screen will allow us to better understand Abraham’s actions, responses, and trust in God throughout his trial. It is worthwhile for us to go back in time and consider what went on in Abraham’s life prior to his trial with Isaac. So let’s take a closer look at what after these things really means:

Now these are the generations of Terah: Terah begat Abram, Nahor, and Haran; and Haran begat Lot. And Haran died before his father Terah in the land of his nativity, in Ur of the Chaldees.

And Abram and Nahor took them wives: the name of Abram’s wife was Sarai… But Sarai was barren; she had no child.

    Genesis 11:27-28, 29-30

Terah took his son Abram, his grandson Lot (Haran’s son), and Sarai his daughter-in-law (his son Abram’s wife) and set out with them from Ur of the Chaldees for the land of Canaan. But when they got as far as Haran, they settled down there. Terah lived 205 years. He died in Haran.

    Genesis 11:31-32 (MSG)

From there, Abraham is given further directions from God Himself:

Now the LORD had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father’s house, unto a land that I will show thee:

And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing:

And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed.

So Abram departed, as the LORD had spoken unto him; and Lot went with him: and Abram was seventy and five years old when he departed out of Haran.

And Abram took Sarai his wife, and Lot his brother’s son, and all their substance that they had gathered, and the souls that they had gotten in Haran; and they went forth to go into the land of Canaan; and into the land of Canaan they came.

And Abram passed through the land unto the place of Sichem, unto the plain of Moreh. And the Canaanite was then in the land.

And the LORD appeared unto Abram, and said, Unto thy seed will I give this land: and there builded he an altar unto the LORD, who appeared unto him.

And he removed from thence unto a mountain on the east of Bethel, and pitched his tent, having Bethel on the west, and Hai on the east: and there he builded an altar unto the LORD, and called upon the name of the LORD.

And Abram journeyed, going on still toward the south.
