To Richard:
Thank you for being my husband, my best friend, my biggest fan, my wise counsel, and a wonderful father to our children. Life has been a blast with you over the years, and I look forward to many more years to come. I love you with all my heart.
Day 1
Be His Wife: I Really Can’t Cook!
So much excitement is in the air. I finally get to be his wife. Now, let’s see. What would my mother do first? Oh, clean the house, do some laundry, and cook dinner. Yeah, cook dinner. Now where’s that recipe book I got from my bridal shower? What to cook, what to cook? Chicken with hollandaise sauce!
As a new wife, I wanted to be everything to my husband. My mind was set to go and I was headed into marital bliss with all the things I knew to do. Besides, I had the perfect example: my mother. She was hardworking, a great wife, and a wonderful cook. Surely I could be all of that. The only problem is, I really can’t cook! Day after day I struggled to pull a decent looking meal together. Night after night I watched my husband drown whatever was on his plate in hot sauce and other seasonings. He would compliment the driest chicken ever just to encourage me. I would smile and apologize because I knew it wasn’t perfect, all the while thinking about the nightmare of having to recook that dry chicken over and over because it wasn’t quite done per my recipe. As a new wife, my self-esteem was diminishing fast and I didn’t know what to do. I found myself standing in front of my stove with tears in my eyes frustrated over hollandaise sauce praying, Lord, let this taste better than it looks.
The Lord hears the prayers of the righteous! When my husband and I sat down at the table to eat the juiciest chicken with hollandaise sauce, instant potatoes, and green beans, something amazing happened! He took his first bite, looked at me, and said, Girl, this is good! I’m going to have to call your momma and tell her you threw down on this chicken and gravy!
I eventually told him that it was not gravy but hollandaise sauce that God had blessed. We later made a deal, he would cook, and I would clean!
I could not be the wife my mom was to my dad. The Lord revealed to me, "I’ve called you to be his wife. He needs you, not your mother." I understood then the woman I was and the wife I was becoming is all that my husband needed.
According to Proverbs 18:22, he who finds a wife finds a good thing
