    INTRODUCTION

MANY PEOPLE DO NOT know who exactly a Christian is. They simply say a Christian is a follower of Jesus Christ or someone who lives like Christ. This statement makes religious sense but it is not entirely true in reality. There is more to it. A Christian is not just a follower of Jesus Christ or someone who lives like Christ, He is the man with the exact life of God in himself. The Christian is the one who lives in Him. This may sound as a simple statement to you but as we delve deeper, your life will receive a turnaround to become miraculous 24/7.

To know who a Christian is, one needs to have a careful understanding of the old man. Most at times, many try to put Adam and a Christian in the same category but there is a big difference between Adam and the Christian. This book is about the new life Christ has brought us and to help explain who we are in Christ Jesus.

    CHAPTER 1: THE OLD MAN

"Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new."2 Corinthians 5:17

WHEN THE BIBLE MAKES mention of a new creation, it implies there was an old creation. And for us to grasp the realities of the new creation in Christ, we have to also understand the old. The old creation was brought in by Adam, whilst the new creation was brought in by Jesus. To fully understand who Adam (the old man) was, we need to know these four things:

✓  How he came into being

    ✓  His nature

    ✓  His purpose

✓  The extent of his purpose

All of these can be answered in just two verses in the book of beginnings.

"And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them."

    Genesis 1:26-27.

    HOW MAN CAME INTO BEING

THROUGHOUT THE AGES, scientists have said man evolved from a monkey which evolved from a lizard and in turn from a fish which came unto the land. How irrational does this sound? Scientists, still are far lacking in knowledge as far as the age of the earth.

In these two verses we can see how man came into being. The Bible says "make man and created man. The word made is the same as make in this passage of scripture. It is from the Hebrew word āśȃ", meaning to make from an already existing material. Firstly, man was made from an already existing material; earth (humus).

    And the Bible says, God went on to create man, which also is from the Hebrew word "bārā", meaning, To make something out of anything that already existed. This part of creation of man is recorded in Genesis 2:7;

"And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul."

The created part of man is his spirit, which is able to contact or fellowship with God. The human part helps him to function on this earth. As a space suit is needed by an astronaut to function in space, so is the humus part of man needed by man to function on this earth. But with all these things, man was living by the life of the blood in him because of the sin he committed.

...Ye shall eat the blood of no manner of flesh: for the life of all flesh is the blood thereof... Lev 17:14.

Although Adam had the breath of God in him, he still had to live by the blood. So, the old man lives by the blood. We shall come to that aspect of life later in our study.

    HIS NATURE

Also we need to understand his nature. Bible says man was created in God’s image and likeness. The word image is the Hebrew word "selem" meaning a representative figure or a copy or visual impression. That is, among all the creatures of God, if you see Adam then you have seen the visual impression of God. This means that God has two arms, two legs, two eyes, etc. Adam was the visual impression of God. And the word likeness is the Hebrew word "demut" meaning resemblance in characteristics pertaining to function.

This is to say man was created to function as God on the earth. The first likeness can be seen in how God created the heavens and the earth. The Bible says "...and God said that let there be light and there was light." That is, you declare and it must be established.

So, the second part we have established is that Adam was created to look and function like God.

HIS PURPOSE AND EXTENT OF HIS PURPOSE

Your purpose defines your reason for being or why you exist. There is nothing created without a purpose. Anything without an assignment or purpose is not fit to live.

"And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth." Gen 1:26

Adam was an extension of God’s dominion on earth. His purpose was to reign over the earth in the stead of God, to have dominion over the earth and not heaven. He was designed to have rule over the things in this earth. In the same verse, he was told to have dominion over everything except his fellow human beings. This is the reason why there are riots in some countries in the world where the Government wants to rule the people. There is friction because the Adamic instinct would not allow anybody to rule him, he will always pop up.

Your nature determines your purpose in this life and also the extent of your purpose. Adam’s purpose was to have dominion over everything in and around the earth. The word dominion is from the Hebrew word "rada", meaning to tread down; i.e. subjugate, prevail against, rule, etc. There is a difference between power and dominion or authority.

Power can influence a situation for a short time but dominion or authority influences that situation as long as that thing which is exerting the authority is present. So what God was telling Adam is that, he can have influence on the earth as long as he is present on this earth. It implies that any intruder in that territory is under his influence no matter the person’s prestige.

This means when God, in the form of a Spirit wants to come into the earth, He will need permission from Adam and secondly, He (God) will be under the influence of man. These are legalities.

Therefore, the purpose of Adam was to manage or see to the affairs of the earth in God’s stead.

So, in understanding who Adam was, we said he was brought into existence, both in the physical and spiritual to look and function like God by having dominion over the earth. However, this dominion was limited.

Adam was created into the God-class; higher than all the creatures of God but he was living by the blood. He was the god of this earth.

"What is man, that thou art mindful of him? And the son of man, that thou visitest him? For thou hast made him a little lower than the angels, and hast crowned him with glory and honour." Psalm 8:4-5

The word angels here do not mean the same as in the scriptures. It is the Hebrew word "elohyim". This is the same word used in Genesis 1:1 for God. It is in its plurality, standing for the Godhead or trinity. So, Adam was made a little lower than the Godhead.

The verse 22 of Genesis chapter 3 says that

And the LORD God said, Behold the man is become as one of us to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand and take also of the tree of life and eat, and live forever.

Although God created man in His image and likeness, man was still not as God in knowledge and life (.I.e. quality of life). Until he sinned by eating the tree of knowledge of good and evil, he was ignorant and even the knowledge he acquired was sensual.

    THE FALL OF ADAM (MANKIND)

THE FALL OF ADAM WAS what created the old man, of which every person born of a woman by the seed of a male is a partaker. Many ask this question; if God is all-knowing, then definitely He knew Adam will not be able to obey the law given to him, so why didn’t God stop him or do anything about it? It’s true that God is all-knowing, all-powerful and present everywhere at the same time.

But the truth is that God is limited in His operations on this earth. For example, Jesus visited his hometown and couldn’t perform mighty miracles. Not that He didn’t try but He tried and it failed. We need to know that we are held responsible for the things that happen in this realm of life. Bible says that God said "let them have dominion" and not "let us". Meaning God or the Godhead is exclusive in this matter. Many people suffer in this life thinking it is God’s business to help them. That is the reason why we pray; to make God have legal access to this earth and change the situation going on in our lives.

Also, the reason why God didn’t interfere is that God made man a moral being, not a robot. We weren’t created as robots without a choice in the matters affecting our lives. God visited Abraham to know what he will say about the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah. God leaves you with the choice in your own will. There is an already laid eternal plan; you either follow it or you do it your own style.

One may also say that it was the plan of God for man to sin because Jesus the Lamb of God was slain before the foundation of the earth. The answer is Yes and No. oh! How I love my God. That is why he is the big God. In these matters, Apostle Paul will say these things are too high for you.

"Thou wilt say then unto me, why doth he yet find fault? For who hath resisted his will? Nay but, O man, who art thou that repliest against God?" Romans 9:19-20

Oh! I love the way the NIV puts it; "But who are you, O man, to talk back to God...."

The reason I said yes and No is because we need to know who God is in order to understand or explain some of the deep truths in the Kingdom. This is the same principle by which prophecy works. The thinking that God is still talking or giving prophecy is not totally correct. Reading this, you may say, this man is going too far, but let me land. Bible says that when God finished creation, He rested. The man is still resting. This is because the word you need has already been spoken. God dwells in eternity and is not bound by time.

What a prophet does is that, he needs to move from time and step into eternity by aligning himself to the Holy Spirit and pick-up words already spoken by God in eternity and bring it into time. That’s why when you pray in tongues your spirit is able to pick up the finest signals which well up in you as a prophecy or word of knowledge or wisdom. The same thing applies to the plans and purposes of God.

Yes, because He had already made all things. He knows the end of time. So, anything that happens in time, whether good or bad, will later have to conform to the results that He expects at the end.  This is what is called the rightness of God.

"LAMED. Forever, O LORD, thy word is settled in heaven." Psalm 119:89

The Bible says He cannot lie, that means when God says a particular mango tree is an orange tree, no matter the evidence you may gather to prove that it is a mango tree, it does not change the fact that it will in time become an orange tree.

No because, Adam could have chosen not to eat the fruit and nothing would have happened. Notice that the lamb was slain before the foundation of the earth not during creation. This means, God made a provision in case Adam failed. Every manufacturer has a second plan.

"And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, of every tree of the garden, thou mayest freely eat: But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die."  Genesis 2:16-17

The reason why God didn’t want Adam to eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil is firstly to make Adam show a certain amount of love back to God. God bestowed His entire creation on earth unto Adam and he wanted Adam to keep just this command as a sign of love to God.

Other examples are Samson, Lot and his family, Abraham, etc. and you. When we fail to keep these things, we become unfaithful to God’s love. I tell some of my friends that there are certain things I cannot do or places
