About this ebook

The purpose of this book is to illustrate for our day the prophecy of Isaiah 61:1-3:

The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me.

Because the Lord has anointed me

To bring good news to the afflicted;

He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted,

To proclaim liberty to captives,

And freedom to prisoners;

To proclaim the favorable year of the Lord,

And the day of vengeance of our God;

To comfort all who mourn,

To grant those who mourn in Zion,

Giving them a garland instead of ashes,

The oil of gladness instead of mourning,

The mantle of praise instead of a spirit of fainting.

So they will be called oaks of righteousness,

The planting of the Lord, that He may be glorified

This prophecy was written of those who are afflicted, brokenhearted and held captive by their own hurts. The promise for those who receive the Lord is beauty, gladness, praise and steadfastness. This book illustrates how one can receive release and healing in the Lord Jesus. It is my prayer that you will receive all the Lord has promised you.

    INTRODUCTION

    The purpose of this book is to illustrate for our day the prophecy of Isaiah 61:1-3:

    The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me.

    Because the Lord has anointed me

    He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted,

    And freedom to prisoners;

    To proclaim the favorable year of the Lord,

    Chapter One

    THE ENEMY WHO BRUISES

    Iwas troubled in my sleep because of a strange dream. Through an open door I could see several snakes crawling around, and as I watched, a snake came into the room where I was standing. To my right I noticed a small baby crawling toward the snake. When I saw the snake turn toward the baby, I realized the situation was desperate. Grabbing a garden tool, I pushed the snake back and with the other hand reached for the baby, struggling to keep the two apart. In the midst of the struggle, I awoke and puzzled over the dream's meaning. I came to realize the dream was a warning from God that Satan would attempt to bruise our fifth child, soon to be born.

    Now the fact that our Enemy exists is not based upon dreams. His existence is as old as the history of man. In the Garden of Eden he appeared in the form of a serpent and deceived the first man and woman. His interest from the beginning has been the total destruction of Gods creation. The warfare began in the Garden.

    God confirmed this unending struggle when He said, I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her seed; he shall bruise you on the head, and you shall bruise him on the heel (Gen. 3:15). Continual enmity and hostility would exist. The seed of the woman, referring directly to Christ, would bruise the serpent' s head. The serpent in turn would bruise His heel.

    Satan is in the business of bruising. He injects certain destructive elements into the emotional being of an individual, inflicting bruises which may last a lifetime. The elements are undetectable at first, but eventually the Enemy creates a place from which he can oppress and control the individual's life. In the emotional area, these elements can be described as rejection, bitterness, hatred, insecurity, fear, etc. In the spiritual being of man, Satan works through pride, selfishness, rebellion, etc. If Satan can gain a place in the emotions of a person, he can pretty well control that Individual's entire life. The spiritual being of man describes his very nature, what he is by choice. However, the emotional being of man is formed without his conscious knowledge or choice. He can be victimized, hurt and bound emotionally by others whom the Enemy uses as instruments. The innocent are his victims.

    Satan is a spiritual being, and his work is spiritual in nature. Man also is a spiritual being, thus the Enemy has ready access to man by this avenue. In dealing with man's problems, one finds they are primarily spiritual in nature. The body is incorporated with the spirit of man and becomes the vehicle of the spirit's expressions, desires and actions. It is referred to in Scripture as the body of death (Rom. 7:24), indicating the spiritual principle of death and sin which works in the body. The term flesh is used synonymously with the principle of lust and sin in Paul's writings. So we conclude that the physical part of man is a relatively insignificant factor in consideration of his problems. Man is primarily a spiritual being, and his problems are spiritual in nature. The emotional bruises which Satan inflicts are often strong contributing factors to man's various spiritual problems.

    What are some of the ways Satan inflicts these bruises?

    Chapter Two

    THE INNOCENT ARE VICTIMS

    Hers was an unwanted birth. Rejection was all Sue knew from the beginning. Life could have been good in this small American town: playmates, a brother whom she loved, grandparents who dearly loved her. But the Enemy seemed to have planned a life of rejection, guilt, self-hatred and fear.

    Sue experienced the natural desires of a child — to receive the love of father and mother and to have the security of a home. But these were snatched from her outreaching hands as problems arose in the home; hatred and division filled the house. Sue knew only merciless punishment and cruel rebuke from her mother, while she was ignored by her father. Many times the small girl would crawl under the house to nurse her wounds and recover from a tirade of anger. There was no peace in the house. Rather, a certain ominous cloud overshadowed it, waiting for the right time to break forth with destruction.

    Well at least she had her playmates and her brother. An oft repeated command was. Don't go near the river! Childlike, Sue, her brother and their friends forgot the command, and near the river they played. Soon
