    A Bitter Peace, but Peace at Last

    Chapter 1

    On the Greeff Farm

    Far away in Africa, O Best Beloved, in a time even before your grandmother lived, we find two children from a large family living on a farm.

    They were sister and brother called Annie and Koos and they were older than the three other children in their family. Because their mother was so busy she often said that Annie and Koos must take responsibility for themselves. Thus, Annie and Koos relied on each other for help, and also did many jobs around the farm to help their mother.

    Mother needed their help because Father was away fighting the Khaki soldiers. They had to carry the wood for the kitchen fire and buckets of water for washing. Everyday Koos fed the chickens and carefully collected the eggs. When it was sunny and windy, they would hang the washing on the line to dry. They liked being older than the other children and liked to be useful.

    But one day Mother said,
