    My Modern Day Stigmata

The Uber driver dropped me off at the emergency room entrance where an oversized male nurse helped me into a wheelchair. The puncture wounds had made walking an impossibility. As he rolled the chair toward the registrar, a trail of blood streamed out of my feet onto the hideous gray hospital floor tile. When we arrived at the desk, an unsmiling woman offered a clipboard without looking up. I extended both of my bleeding hands to show her the wounds.

Her eyes flashed up at me. How did that happen?

I glanced at her nametag and learned her name was Betty. It is called stigmata. One minute I was fine, and the next I was in agonizing pain.

    Stigmata? What's that? Betty asked.

In a sense, it is a privilege. You see, I am finally able to understand some of Christ's pain through this inexplicable miracle.

She stared at me quizzically. Okaaayyy, we will have a look and maybe a tetanus shot just in case.

She asked me a series of questions and typed them into her computer. Then she called for the male nurse to roll my chair into a small room. He helped me onto the hospital bed without a word and shut the door behind him. As I laid on the hospital bed, I closed my eyes. Then I reached out my arms and crossed my feet as Jesus is depicted on the crucifix. It was as if thousands of years melted away. I could sense the heat of the midday sun on my body. What an amazing experience! My heart swelled with compassion for our Savior.

Just then, the door flung open. I quickly drew in my arms to my chest and sat upright. A woman briskly strode to the foot of my bed and outstretched her hand to shake mine saying, I am Doctor Thomson.
