Somewhere In An Amish Town - Sarah Amberson

A soft rain sprinkled down, making a pitter-patter sound on Emily’s umbrella. Emily didn’t know how long she had been standing there by her husband’s grave. It just didn’t seem real yet.

The granite headstone was there at the top of the fresh patch of dirt, showing the world that someone had just been buried there. When she thought of Mitchel, she remembered all the beautiful times they had shared. She remembered when she had first met him and when he had asked her to marry him. She remembered his warm loving smile and his deep voice.

She was only twenty-four, so young to be a widow. Of course, she had married him at nineteen. She hadn’t even joined the church yet. In the Amish community where she was from, if she had joined the church before marrying an Englisher, she would have been cut off forever.

But now, she was thinking of going back. She had nothing remaining out here in the Englisher world. Everything she had had was buried in front of her.

She and Mitchel hadn’t been able to have children. They had only had each other. Mitchel’s family had died when he was young, and Emily’s family was back with the Amish church.

Emily tucked her hand into her pocket where the letter she had received from her mother sat. the letter welcoming her back home to live with her family. Emily’s heart ached with homesickness. She hadn’t had any real contact with her family for so long that she wasn’t sure what to expect. They sounded as if they would be happy to have her back in their letter.

But would they really be as welcoming when she got there as they had sounded? She had left the Amish community. She had decided to marry a man
