    Jessica Bates would marry her teenage sweetheart Alan after getting pregnant in high school. The two would have a tumultuous marriage which would end in a bitter divorce and custody battle over their two children. They would both remarry, Jessica would marry a sheriff's deputy while Alan would marry a colleague for the theater company where he worked.     EARLY LIFE

    Alan Bates was one of the most popular students at Sands Valley High School. He was class president for four years running and had the makings of a future star in whatever endeavor he chose. With his long hair and clean cut features, Alan looked like a cover model for a brochure of an elite private school.

    His future was bright until senior year when he began dating Jessica McCord.

    Jessica occupied the world opposite of Alan. While he was outgoing and gregarious, she was anti-social and a part of the Goth subculture on campus. Alan was quick to smile and make friends while Jessica was a dour fixture around campus with her black clothing and heavy mascara. She would routinely make fun of Alan and his student government friend behind their backs. Because of their stark differences, more than a few eyebrows were raised when they began dating.

    Jessica sets her sights on this guy, author M. William Phelps said. And that's it. There's my golden ticket for life. There's my white picket fence. My long days on the couch watching soap operas while I'm having his babies.

    What ensued in their relationship was exactly that. Jessica became pregnant with Alan's baby. Trying to be a responsible man, Alan decided to marry her, going against the wishes of his family.

    She (Jessica) grew up in a broken home, prosecuting attorney Roger Brown said. Her mother and father were divorced. Her father was abusive, physically abusive to her and her mother. He wound up killing a woman in Tennessee. I don't necessarily believe in a bad seed but maybe she got it.

    Albert Callis, Jessica's father, would be sentenced to life in prison for the murder. The daily beatings he administered on Jessica and her mother would traumatize the young woman for life. She adopted the Goth lifestyle and seemingly could not find a way to change her mindset.
