Introduction
If patience is a virtue, my kids don’t have it. My five and three-year-old boys are constantly anticipating exciting family events or holidays with regular inquiries as to how many days they have to wait until Thanksgiving, their birthdays, or our annual trip to the beach house. And who can blame them? The adult version may be crossing days off the calendar, but the truth is that we all love to look forward to these celebrations. What better way to focus this anticipation than with a countdown calendar? Countdown calendars somehow make the wait more bearable and make the ultimate event seem even more ... eventful. As with many of the ideas behind our Design Collective titles, this book saw its beginnings as I began to search around for a calendar for our family and was disappointed with what I found in the stores. As the acquisitions editor for Stash Books, I felt sure that I could find a group of inspirational, original alternatives to store-bought calendars that encourage you to create unique and personal projects instead.
This is the third book in our series of Design Collective titles, in which I have invited a variety of artists to share their fabulous creations with you. Within these pages you will find countdown calendars for a variety of holidays and events, but what I love most about them is that they can each be easily customized and personalized based on the fabric choices alone. Throughout, I have offered suggestions for different themes, objects to include in the pockets, and tips on how to make the projects even easier. Some of the projects are easily achievable, and some are a bit more of a challenge, but all are enjoyable, original, and artful designs. I hope you enjoy making and gifting these calendars for yourself, friends, and family.
—Susanne Woods
Whether returning to school after the winter break or starting a new year in the fall, this countdown calendar will keep everyone on track. Made from wool felt and embellished with embroidery, these miniature squares that mimic iconic staples of the classroom are secured with hook-and-loop tape to the ubiquitous lined-paper background. Use up your small scraps of felt, keep your eyes on your own paper,
and get to work on this handy reminder.
Amy Adams is a UK-based textile artist specializing in designing and making softies from an ever-increasing catalog of patterns. These softies are available as one-off pieces and as published patterns. Her work mixes vintage and recycled fabrics, as well as felted wool, with a dash of hand-stitched embroidery.
