About this ebook
Between 2005 and 2013, one woman embarked on one seemingly simple quest: tofind and interview, the world's greatest music producers. What followed was across-global odyssey covering eight years of travel, that zig-zagged time, countries, cultures and genres; an epic adventure that went deep intounderground clubs, back alleys, deserts and debauchery, in planes, on foot, ontrains and in golf buggies. Along the way, it uncovered, the most enthralling, endearing andrevealing stories behind some of the most prolific and impactful albums ever made.Hundreds of hours of transcripts, distilled down into a potent insight into what itmeans to be a music producer -- in all of its wild, steadying, meticulous, expansive, frustrating, gratifying, pain-staking and triumphant glory. Off TheRecord is a deeply intimate revelation of the poetic and intimate relationshipbetween artist and producer; a smorgasbord of stories from the musicalmidwives who were hands deep in the birthing of albums that caught theears of millions. Lissie Turner, then known as Mel Bampton, was a broadcaster on triple j radio, initially on Drive with Charlie Pickering, before taking over the 9:00am to12:00pm slot and becoming known as 'Mel in the Morning'. Mel is the creatorof Like A Version, The Album Series and was the presenter, producer and co-engineer of The Producer Series - the radio documentary that set the whole crazyadventure in motion. What had its birth in the safety of a Sydney radio studiobecame a life-consuming project, as it morphed over 16 years, from radio to book, spanning thousands of kilometres and hundreds of thousands of words, to create the most comprehensive, joyous and revealing look at the fascinating and unique kind of human that is: The Producer.
