Part 1
Wrigley’s Gum
In Chicago during the late 1800’s, William Wrigley Jr, founder of Wrigley’s Gum, sat with fellow Chicago businessmen during their weekly meeting.
During that meeting every person in the room decided that putting up a billboard in Downtown Chicago was a waste of money. It was the feeling in the room that nobody driving by looked at the billboards and certainly no one made a purchase as a result of the billboards.
Wrigley had a brilliant thought. If every major business refuses to put up a billboard in Downtown Chicago, then I’ll put billboards everywhere!
This idea propelled Wrigley to the next level. He did the opposite of everyone else which put him in a unique position to remove all competition.
Untraditional Publishing
Un·tra·di·tion·al: Not part of a tradition; not customary.
William Wrigley Jr used Untraditional methods to grow his business.
What are some other words associated with Untraditional?
Unconventional
Unorthodox
Unusual
Here’s my favorite...Original!
Three Options for Publishing
Traditional Publishing: A contract is offered to purchase the rights of your book and to publish, market and sell your book through booksellers and other retailers.
Self-Publishing: Publish, market and sell your book without the involvement of an established publisher.
If everyone is using these two options, then it’s time to be unconventional, unorthodox, unusual and original!
Untraditional Publishing: Preparing and issuing books for sale that’s not customary, using a more original process.
When do most self-published authors quit?
It’s a common theme for self-published authors give up on selling their book because sales are low. These authors attempted selling their book to family, friends and co-workers, followed by a mass selling on social media and Amazon.
An average, self-published authors quite after sixteen weeks. Of 1,000 self-published authors, only 2 will continue moving forward.
As for you, this is what you’re saying, I know that slow and steady wins the race! I’m going to break tradition and become Untraditional!
Selling Books on the Internet
More than a million books are self-published on Amazon each year, not to mention the amount of traditional books. 7 out of every 10 self-published author uses Amazon.
This number has grown to 100 million authors on just this one retail site.
Imagine if every person in Texas, California, Florida and New York published a book and you had to compete with them. That’s what you’re going up against by publishing a book on Amazon.
How can you have better odds than 100,000,000 to 1?
By using Untraditional Publishing, you would think like this, If everyone is using Amazon, then I’ll go to a place where there’s less competition. In fact, I’ll only publish my books in a place where I’m the only author selling on that website!
I like the odds of you selling a book when you’re the only author in the room, but where is there such a place?
Your website of course!
Not one single author on the planet can sell on your website unless you give them permission. Let the 100 million flood Amazon while you think like William Wrigley Jr and conduct business the opposite of everyone else.
How can your website be different than every other author?
Most authors have a home page, blog, place to sell books, about page, newsletter
