    Aurora Borealis

Stars yet blinked through the darkness

And the air was brisk and still

As the snow crunched under my high-topped boots

And my down coat chased the chill.

A flicker through barren tree tops

Drew my eyes to the Northeast

Where God’s paintbrush was washing the skies

With a show of a visible feast.

    Colors brightened as they danced

To the tune only God could play,

Covering miles of sky in a leap of joy

While all below waited for Day.

Earth was silently holding her breath

In ecstasy, not wanting to move,

For fear the disturbance would chance distract

The lights from their heavenly groove.

Time whispered by as I stood there

In awe and not wanting to leave,

Not hearing the whine, nor feeling the tug,

Of my dog’s cold nose up my sleeve.

I held him and tried to show him

    The lights dancing gaily around,

But then ’cross the lake a hungry bark

    Encouraged a chorus of hounds.

So, we walked on home to begin our day

Feeling blessed to have chanced to be

Walking in sight of the studio of God

While He painted a scene just for me.

    The Vagaries Of Life

The trappings of this fragile earth

    Are baubles on life’s tree.

    They hang around collecting dust,

    Reflecting naught but thee.

Why hang a pretty looking glass

    From every empty limb

When thou must prove how proud thou art

    To stand for viewing them?

The gold and silver thou hast stored

To pull thee through rough times,

Will melt like butter in a fire

    Though you’ve a dozen mines.

When He returns to claim His own,

My Father will not need thee

To show His splendor to the world.

There’ll be none who don’t see.

His glory shall be known by all

Who know and know Him not.

Those who do will praises sing.

    Those who don’t will rot.

Keep the faith within your breast

And never let it fail thee,

For it will suffer to sustain

    When other causes strike thee.

He is the One who will be true

    When other friends shall fail.

He’ll be thy shelter in the storm,

Thy ship, thy sea, thy sail.

There’s naught He will not be for thee

    If thou wilt but abide.

He’ll bear thee safely to thy shore

    Upon the evening tide.

A Prayer For My Loved Ones

    Dear Heavenly Father up above,

Please, watch over those I love.

Keep them safe, protected and sound,

No matter where or with whom they are found.

Help them to know and help them to see

I love them and hope they love me.

Help them to be gentle and good,

Loving, compassionate, kind as they should.

Be with them when they make a decision,

Not to be hurt by someone’s derision.

    Don’t let
