Latent Heat - David Fredette
He Walked a Mile and Swam Back
He walked a mile and swam back.
What began as nonchalant
resulted in a rigorous act.
For, he was eighty.
I walked with him,
not ruling out the notion that he may be fading.
But, when we reached the beach’s end
we turned around and walked into the ocean.
It was at this point, he said, with his back stroke, Catch me, if you can!
.
So, I used the back stroke, side stroke, and free style.
I made it all of two hundred feet.
But, that of the greatest generation
swam the full mile.

Shall I Cross That Bridge?
What started out as meager
Turned out to be marginally secure.
But, now I approach a bridge.
Naturally, I want more.
The steel structure spans over
A ten knot river, called A Humbling Experience
.
It must be crossed
To reach the town of Competence
.
This place of arrival
Provides much to reap.
Cross the bridge
And you will have earned your keep.
However, it is a rusting spectacle.
Past its prime.
It has a relatively low factor of safety.
Hence, poor engineering design.
If the stress on it’s trusses
Are to great,
The bridge will fail.
In effect, I will plunge into A Humbling Experience
, and be swept away.
So, I ask,
Shall I cross that bridge?
There is a routine now.
Going to Competence is attractive, but a bit on the edge.

Leap
What began as micro,
May have endured,
And mutated into greater breeds.
A process made possible by a soul born to leap.
One could associate it
With that of the missing link.
Sophisticated, with a means to speak,
They walk erect, and start charging fees.
The crossover doesn’t just occur there.
It jumps from single to multiple cell,
