About this ebook

Book Summary
The Lift describes the nature of the present and defines the mechanism that brings about this 'present's motion' from future to past.
Basically, it was an idea. In other words, the lift consists of the same substance as other ideas. Can you follow? Of course, once the lift was completed, various experts came and inspected it, assessed it and then issued a permission for its use. After them, some technicians came to make small repairs and final touches where required or to paint certain bits in different colors. A question of taste, you know. Apart from that, the lift essentially remained the same. Are you still with me?

    Warning!

I wish all of you, who at this strange and fateful hour are about to enter the quantum literary collapse of ‘The Lift’, to take to heart that you are doing so at your own risk. Anyone who, regardless of age, sex, looks or brains, uses this ‘Lift’, either to verify his or her general concepts of time/space, to explore new ‘revolutionary’ dimensions, or out of sheer curiosity, is strongly advised to take into account Article five of Chapter six of the Regulations on Rights and Duties of the quantum literary Lifts’ Users, or else face the danger to remain trapped inside forever . . .

    Chapter 1

    - Hey, wait for me!

    - Sure, sure, come on in! This lift can take many people and there’s only me, as you see. Which floor are you going to? I’m going to the top!

    - The top? Oh, in that case I’d better take another lift! I’m going to the basement—the Casino!

    - You can only get to the Casino with this lift! There’s no other!

    - Is that so?!

    - Absolutely! Any other lift would be merely an illusion and deception. If you attempted to enter, you would only step into a void.

    - I’ll just have to take this one then, although our directions are obviously quite different.

    - Different directions, yes, but the same lift.

    - Do you mind if we go to the basement first? I’m in a hurry!

    - No problem. Let me press the basement button for you. Off we go . . .

    - . . . Nice lift!

    - Indeed, in lifts like this we only rarely descend and ascend.

    - . . . Why is it taking so long? I don’t feel any movement at all! Do you?

    - No. I would say that the reason why we don’t feel anything is because this lift isn’t going anywhere at all.

    - I beg your pardon? Are you suggesting that the lift is standing still?

    - Yes. It isn’t moving either up or down. Nor in any other direction.

    - What are you saying?! I must get to the Casino in time! Please tell me how to open this door? I see no handle at all!?

    - Of course not. Of what use is a handle to a door which can’t be opened?

    - Whaaat?! It can’t be opened?! What shall we do now? I’ll press the button for the top floor. Maybe that will work!

    - If the basement button isn’t working, no other one will.

    - What about this one?

    - Which one?

    - The
