    TO THE READER:

This book is written from the premise of the Black experience . . .

This sharing of Poetry and Prose began with my introduction to Poetry from

some of the most phenomenal writers in our history. Paul L. Dunbar, The

Renaissance Man Langston Hughes . . . Maya Angelou, Nikki G. Alice Walker

and many more. Influence is Powerful . . . History sacred. Their words bring

the experience of Faith, Hope, Love and Laughter to the light . . . This work

    Is my light . . .

    SUNDAY MORNING

When I was little maybe five or so, some of the clearest memories I have was a feeling I got when I was in church, it made me feel very special. So every Sunday without missing a beat there we were. Mom, Dad, brother and me sitting on shiny smooth pews listening to the word of God.

I knew the Ten Commandments by heart and felt very proud that God, pictured in my mind with his long white beard and flowing white robe in trimmings of gold, loved me. I really wanted to be grown-up because there was nothing like grown-up church folks in and on their Sunday best.

Beautiful clothes fancy hats and shiny shoes mingling in warm and close conversation, kind words and spiritual oneness encompassed my anticipation of growing up and becoming part of this phenomenon.

I did my very best to sit still and listen for as long as I could, just like the grown ups did, only it was hard to focus my attention before wandering and wonder took over; I wonder who’s going to get happy today . . . Yes Lord, hallelujah and Amen.

Sitting on the end and next to my mom I missed nothing; my Mom smells so good and looks so pretty especially her legs with her Red fox stockings and high heels on, Boy-oh-Boy, I can hardly wait to grow up.

Although, by now I’ve become fidgety and it’s getting harder to sit still, and the heat of the day made my beautiful Sunday best dress stick to my skin, then my lacy anklets and patent leather shoes began to swing back and forth (on their own of course); when the lady dressed like a nurse with white gloves on winks at me and brings me a fan just like hers. I could tell she thought I was being a good girl so I sat up straighter and began to fan myself ever so slowly—you know, just like the grown-ups did. I knew that after church they’d all congregate on the steps and in the yard and talk about how the Reverend preached a while and drove the message home on this Sunday morning . . .
