MISSION STATEMENT in a POEM
HECTOR SANTANA
For inspiration some poets rely on past experiences
Others are talented at composing sentences
Some incorporate the arts and sciences
Like fingerprints, we all have our unique differences
To the readers I feel I should explain
My goal is to educate and entertain
For this moment I have been training my brain
Hoping to bring some sanity to a world going insane
I am not Mr. Know-it-all; do not want to give that impression
A Social Worker by trade that is my profession
Helping others succeed for me is an obsession
My forte is helping people deal with depression
I believe a huge portion of our efforts and resources
Should be concentrated on educating our youth
Through mentoring, tutoring and other sources
Without guidance we have all seen the ugly truth
Education begins before the child’s conception
Parenting begins after birth is a misconception
Expecting mothers should consult with a nutritionist
Instead of down the road sending their child to a Psychiatrist
I feel life experiences qualify me
To metaphorically help you down from that tree
I submit to you my mission statement in this fashion
Hoping that many share in my passion
To encourage our youth and do the right thing
To showcase their talents, to hear them sing
Bring out their inner beauty and ignore the bling
Become successful in life and wear a championship ring
Together we can all make this world a better place.

The short version
I was nine months old when my dad took me from my biological mother (the other woman) and placed me in the care of his wife and five half brothers and sisters.
My first recollection of being alive was waking up to screams and a loud banging on the door in the middle of the night. I must have been three years old at the time as my oldest sister tried kicking down the bathroom door while my father was attempting to hang himself. This was the beginning of a series of events that would define the person I am today. In this attempt to describe the events in my life I promise you that this is all true and without exaggeration.
My father survived the suicide attempt but a very confusing period in my life was about to unfold. He was a weekend drinker with a violent reaction to alcohol. When he drank people would get hit and furniture would get broken. During these episodes I would hide behind the sofa with a box of crayons and construction paper escaping to a world where super heroes ruled and the genesis of my creativity unfolded.
At the age of five one of my half siblings abused me sexually. Later I would find the courage to stop the abuse and thankfully was able to overcome that and a lot more. My eyesight was poor and started wearing prescription glasses at the age of five. My eyes were so bad I could not see what the teacher wrote on the blackboard from the front row of seats. I also had a condition that to this day I do not know what it is but my head
