About this ebook

Words I Painted is a collection of poetry accompanied by original works of art by author J.E. Demick. Recognizing that we are surrounded by beauty and savagery both in the natural world and in the world of human nature, Words I Painted probes the essence of nature and the emotions of human beings. Part One: On Nature, chronicles the authors unique observations of the natural world, from coyotes to lightning, from storms to offspring, from atoms to outer space. Here the reader will be immersed in the beauty and wonder of our natural surroundings, so often over looked. In Part Two: On Human Nature, the author turns her attention to the vast array of human emotions from temptation to resentment to love, and also examines human constructs such as racism and war. The artwork represents the authors impressions or visions of the poetry, and offers the reader one of many possible interpretations of the written word. Words I Painted will kindle the fire in the mind which craves to regain a fascination with our surroundings, and with each other, again.

    Goodnight, Orion

Opening the side door to the house

I step outside into the evening to let the dogs out and feed the rabbit.

It is my favorite time of grey.

The sun, setting, stretches its last feeble rays of light

    over the horizon.

Too weak for scattering a blue sky,

but too strong for stars to be visible:

A prelude to darkness, a few moments of pause

between the clatter of day and night creatures.

    I go about my chores of cleaning water bowls and doling out meals;

a few moments alone in the stillness that I treasure.

As I make my way slowly back to the door, it is now gone.

The grey has forfeited to black.

The stars light seeps through the empty reaches of deep space,

    muddles through our atmosphere,

finally to my upward gazing eyes and into my soul.

I breathe it in. I feel them out there.

Orion takes his position above my neighbor’s house,

    as he does every night.

    My hand on the doorknob

I take one more instant to revel:

    Goodnight, Orion.

    Brain

    Cells, blood, bones, and skin:

    outwardly a vacuum, but

    inside, galaxies.

    galaxy.tif

    Horse

Every day for years I’ve driven by this pasture

    and seen you standing there,

    waiting
