Author

Eva L. Dunavan

Eva Dunavan and her husband, Joe, reside on an East Central Illinois farm. Her farm experience and their travels inspire her story ideas. She has a Master of Education degree from the University of Illinois and a diploma from the Institute of Children’s Literature in Redding, Connecticut. She has taught for thirty-six years (kindergarten to seventh grade) and understands the importance of children grasping the concepts of boundaries in relationships. Choices and consequences are showcased in her stories. With a touch of humor, she develops her characters; and they model concepts of loving, sharing, caring and learning to establish boundaries.

    Chapter One

    Hiding Out

Ker-bang! The lightning bolts zigzagged across the sky. I was terrified. I saw the bolt that had hit the tree. It caused it to splinter and come crashing down on my doghouse.

The constant rumbling caused my ears to hurt too. I decided it was time to leave.

I tried to slide my collar by pulling hard on my chain and twisting my head side to side. It took several tugs, but I successfully slid it over my ears.

Finally free, I raced down the black asphalt pavement. My heart pounded as I leaped over the ditch. My paw pads stung as they hit the hard dirt field clods.

Onward I raced searching for shelter. Then, I spotted a safe shelter. I dove into a grove of trees with an underlying thicket. I didn’t know how long I had been running or even the direction of my doghouse. I just knew; I was lost, scared, exhausted and extremely hungry. I decided to lie down, and the last thing I remember was my eyes fluttering shut.

I woke up because pounding rain was stinging my nose. The cold rain had formed a puddle around me. Now, I lay shivering under the brush trying to collect my thoughts.

The storm’s intensity had picked up and started the tree branches swaying violently. I then decided to leave the thicket and follow a gnarly old hedgerow. Maybe I could jump up a rabbit, unfortunately, all I saw was their white fuzzy tails disappear under a log.

I trotted on, and my nostrils picked up an aroma of baking bread. I saw a lady standing in her cozy kitchen kneading dough. Perhaps, she would feed me and give me a drink.
