About this ebook

The book features two little girls, a dog, and a donkey, plus Santa Claus and his "talking reindeer." Mikea lived in the desolate North Land. She had no friends, so she wrote a letter to Santa Claus, asking Santa, instead of toys, to bring her a little girl to play with for one evening. Sydney Hayes had befriended Santa the previous year when he fell off the Hayess roof. Mrs. Claus thought that Sydney would be the perfect friend for Mikea. Santa and the reindeer decided to bring Sydney to meet Mikea. Santa picked Sydney up, and they started for the North Land. Sitting beside Santa in his sleigh while they drifted through the starlit sky was a "magical journey," and a visit by the Christmas Angel added to Sydney's excitement. Although Mikea's parents were in a state of shock upon seeing Santa and the reindeer, the two girls bonded immediately, and they spent the evening visiting like they had known each other forever. Out in the barnyard, Mikea's dog and donkey visited with the reindeer. When Santa announced that it was time to return Sydney to her house, the girls hugged and vowed to be "friends for life."

    Dedication

This book is dedicated to its hero, Sydney Hayes. When I wrote the story, Sydney was living in Dumfries Virginia with her parents and her sister, Jazzmine.

Sydney’s mother, Selina, was an Australian foreign exchange student in Independence, Missouri. Our family was Selina’s host family while she completed her senior year at William Chrisman High School. Selina, her husband, and four children are now members of our extended family. I am proud to be called grandpa by Sydney and her siblings. Sydney is a junior at Howard University.

    Preface

In 1997, I wrote a poem for Sydney’s third Christmas. The next year I followed it with a Christmas story. Since the story refers to events described in the poem, I included it in this book.

I wrote the story to read to Sydney on her fourth Christmas. Other than Sydney, I never intended it to be read by others. When I passed my eighty-third birthday, I decided to submit it for publication—thinking that others might enjoy reading my story. On November 5, 2013, Xlibris published that version of A Christmas Friend.

In this revised edition, I have improved the format to make the story easier for young people to read.
