PREFACE
"Treasures From The Elders To Biographies And Events of Past and Present, is an outcome of a summer workshop sponsored by the University of Wisconsin in the summer of 1970. There were eight schools from the District of Columbia Public School System participating in the workshop. The name of the workshop was
Integrated History". The purpose of the workshop was to develop a curriculum that would integrate United States History with African-America History.
One of the activities, participants were asked to do at the Integrated History Workshop was to trace their family history back as far they could. I began to trace my maternal history and could not go beyond Mattie Cross and Joseph Cross, my great grandparents. I shared with her the experience I had at the workshop. I was very surprised when she began to share stories about Grandma Duckett, a name I had never heard anyone mention until that moment. I thought she was talking about her grandmother, until she informed me, that Grandma Duckett was her
