About this ebook

Most of the poetry contained in Maelstrom was written in my junior and senior years of high school. At the time the Vietnam War was winding down. Life was about changes and finding who you wanted to be or first finding out who you were. Faith had been a big part of my life being a preachers kid. My faith has grown through the years and I began to share my poetry with others. My friends suggested that my writing would be of some consolation to others. May these writings bring you joy and happiness along your pilgrimage through life.

    Maelstrom - H. Michael Frye

    A RAINY DAY AND SCHOOL

    O n a rainy day at school I become a fool.

Who can think when their mind is in a downpour?

You can only sit and stare at the floor,

Look out the windows, or the door.

Cold, windy rain makes a body feel weary.

A school day when it rains is so dreary.

The words and numbers on the blackboards all wash away.

And the teachers voices muffled by the rumble

Are so low you can’t hear what they say.

Your mind has gone a thousand mile astray.

    What a lonely day!

What more can I say about this rainy day?

Couldn’t we lie in the hay, listen to the rain on the tin, and cancel school?

Forget grammar, math, books, and just this once skip class—break a rule?

This is the dream of a rainy day fool.

I am in school! The rain will not
