Whatever Goes Around Comes Back Around - Deborah O. Opara
Chapter 1
This Christmas is about to begin with a blast! My stepmom and stepdad are getting married! Yes, I know I had to approve, in which I did! He is super nice!
Now start packing today because we’re leaving tomorrow at twelve.
My stepfather smiled and looked at my stepmom. I am so happy she found him. That’s not even the best part. The best part is that Caroline and Branny are invited! And maybe Elisha. That’s the part of my stepdad that I don’t like. He’s too nice! In fact, he invited half of Deli town. But hey, it’s their wedding.
We were all sitting down in the kitchen on the high chairs.
Can we go shopping?
Maurine asked.
Why do you need to go shopping?
Stepmom responded.
Because I don’t have a dress.
Maurine frowned, a fake one. That girl loves to lie. She has like ten formal dresses that she has never worn.
Maurine, I think I’m sure I brought you like five to ten formal dresses that you refuse to ever wear.
Stepmom scowled at her.
Well, your thoughts are trying to tell you the truth,
I told her, more like a snort.
Shut up. Why do you have to be so crappy at times?
She rolled her eyes. I didn’t bring you into the conversation.
But I’m here in the conversation, so what are you going to do about it?
I rolled my eyes. I noticed that I’ve been rolling my eyes a lot these days.
I’m going to tell our stepparents about your relationship.
She smirked.
You b—
I started, but you know Maurine.
Our beloved stepparents, you have a stepchild that has a boyfriend,
she said in a bad British accent.
What, Savannah, since when?
My stepmom said. How come you didn’t tell me about this? How long has this been happening?
Mom, first, don’t believe people all the time; and second, I have a friend that is a boy but nothing is going on,
I said.
We will talk about it later,
she said as she narrowed her eyes at me.
So are we going shopping or what?
Maurine said.
No, you will have to pick one of the dresses I bought,
she said. I’ve spent a lot of money, Maurine, money does not co—
I know, money does not come from trees, I get it,
she said abruptly.
I have a surprise for you, guys.
My stepdad settled. We’re moving after the wedding.
To where? Your house?
I asked, putting one eyebrow up.
Your good at guessing, aren’t you?
he said. Yes, we are moving to my house.
Does your house have food?
Stella said.
Lots.
He laughed.
Do you have like a crafts room?
Bloom spoke.
Just for you,
he said.
Is it a one story, two story, or a mansion?
Maurine asked.
What do you want?
he asked.
Of course we all love mansions, but tha—
she started.
It is.
Really? Yay!
she yelled, and I think I was deaf for a few seconds.
So you guys start packing,
he said, getting off of his high chair.
My sisters and I went upstairs to our room. I entered my room and unplugged my phone from the charger. I unlocked my phone and sent a text message to Branny and Caroline.
Start packing because tomorrow is going to be a big day.
I dropped my phone on the counter, brought out my luggage, and started packing. Sometimes packing can be boring. It depends on where you’re going.
I finally closed my bag, zipped it up, and put it by my door. Then my stepmom walked in. No, she better not come and talk about this relationship thing because nothing is going on. We’re friends, right?
Let’s talk.
She smiled and gestured to sit on my bed. So I sat down too.
Talk about what?
I asked, knowing the answer.
Savy, how come you never told me? I’m here for you,
she said.
Please don’t do this.
I closed my eyes.
Do what?
You know I hate when things in the movie become reality. Don’t do that, you know I hate it.
But they do occur in situations like this Savannah, know you’re going to start talking.
Stepmom, he’s my friend, nothing else.
Sure about that? You know you can tell me anything.
Yes, I know that, so are we done now?
We are, but remember you can tell m—
Anything, I got it.
OK. Get ready for dinner. We’re going to Berry Garden,
she said as she took one step outside my room.
That’s Bloom’s favorite restaurant. Can we go to mine, Cheeses?
No, your stepdad picked it, so we’re eating there,
she said and left.
Chapter 2
So I know this is a stupid idea, but I’m going to ask you which one I should take for the wedding.
Maurine stepped into my room, rolling her eyes, holding two dresses in her hand—a blue diamond one and a red kind of lace dress. That might make her too grown-up. She always like being that way, but she is just a child.
Do you really want my help because if you do, I don’t want any of… you know, your problems.
I rolled my eyes.
Whatever, so pick,
she said tapping her feet like a prostitute.
Can you please tell me why you told Mom that? Like seriously, what’s up with that?
Well, what’s up with you being in my business?
Well, we were all there.
Shut up and just pick.
The red looks too grown-up for you.
So are you picking the blue?
I guess.
Such a complicated person.
She turned and walked away.
My sisters can be annoying, but there is something deep inside us called love, and we use it, but not in a way everybody uses it, I guess.
I dressed up, collected my phone, and walked out.
So I heard you like Cheeses.
My stepfather, in a tuxedo, grinned, sitting on a high chair and
