“The Vampire Trucker” - John R. Cole
Prologue
T he Vampire Trucker
was born in Berlin, Germany in the year 1657. His identity must be changed every fifty years, as questions arise why he continues to live on, as others around him begin to die off. In today’s world, he takes the role of an eighteen wheeler truck driver. The Vampire Trucker
must adapt to the world around him, therefore he functions during the daylight hours by eating jalapeno peppers which provides him a defense against the sunlight. A former role as a chemist provides him with an invisible pill, which once taken, has a duration period of up to four hours. However, the invisible pill can only be taken once daily.
Those who claim to have seen The Vampire Trucker,
describe him to be a tall man with sandy colored hair. He appears to be in his late 50’s to early 60’s; his body is described as stocky yet strong, weighing close to 300 lbs. No one has ever witnessed him close enough to tell of eye color or facial hair. His clothes are always black in color and witness reports always show him wearing a long black leather coat.
On the surface The Vampire Trucker’s
appearance seems to be like any other trucker. He drives for an established company, located in Akron, OH. He has a great Operations Manager, named Mike Cady and a wonderful dispatcher named Stacy that schedules all his loads to haul. So The Vampire Trucker
may or may not be who he appears to be, only time will reveal who he really is.
The Vampire Trucker
may at times have a physical address but the road is where he calls home. He drives up to seven hundred and fifty miles and above a day in all kinds of weather, with eighteen wheels beneath him rolling along all types of terrain from flat dusty highways to interstates through snow covered mountains. The Vampire Trucker
believes timing is everything; therefore he makes it a point to pace himself accordingly to ensure he is always at the right place at the right time. The days are long, followed by much shorter nights that are spent at various Truck Stops along the way for a brief rest and refuel for both him and his rig.
Chapter 1
T he Vampire Trucker
has packed his rig and is ready to roll. It’s early Monday morning, the sun is out and it’s a clear day, not a cloud in the sky. He receives a call from Stacy, his dispatcher with load instructions and he’s as they say on the road again! He’s to pick up a load in Houston, TX and deliver it to Los Angeles, CA. The Vampire Trucker
logs in, sets his GPS and by 10:00 AM sharp he arrives in Houston, TX. He is given instructions to back in to the loading dock, he is loaded and back on the road in a couple of hours. First he sets out for the scales to weigh his heavy load of 45,000 lbs. before entering on to Interstate 10. As he proceeds down Interstate 10 he anxiously looks forward to reaching El Paso, TX, one of his regular stomping grounds.
The Vampire Trucker
has driven 10 long hours, in the dark of night; he pulls into an El Paso, truck stop. It’s late and the truck stop is quite full. He drives up and down several rows, until he finds a vacant spot toward the back of the parking lot; he backs in and shuts his rig down for the night, then he takes the long stroll to shower and dress in his usual black attire for the evening. Before venturing out, he must first stop in at the local truck stop restaurant for dinner.
The waitress takes his order of a thick juicy steak, baked potato, salad and of course his much needed daily dose of jalapeno peppers. After finishing his meal, he tips the waitress well, thanks her and walks out into the night. As he looks up into the sky he sees there is a full moon and very few clouds, an absolutely perfect night for a conquest.
He then calls a cab to take him to one of his many local topless bars he frequents. The cab pulls up and he recognizes the driver, he’s an older man who goes by Sal, short for Salvatore and he has driven him before. They engage in some small talk during the short ride. Sal tells him he will be working all night and to be sure and call him when he is ready to leave. The Vampire Trucker
says he will do so, pays him and gives him a $20.00 tip and steps out of the cab. There he meets a dancer, who calls herself Rose, she is a petite girl with long black hair, dark eyes and skin that looks like it was kissed by the sun. Hours go by as he enjoys the live entertainment of all the dancers. However, he is enchanted by Rose and orders a private lap dance. Then after a few drinks and conversation he extends an invitation for her to return to his rig for more of the same. She accepts and he calls Sal to take them back to his rig at the truck stop. Once inside he produces a bottle of whiskey and pours them a couple of drinks. She reciprocates with a few more dances much more provocative than before. As it approaches 3:00 AM he offers her a couple of Somas and she gladly accepts. They begin kissing, the Somas have taken effect and he moves to her neck and bites. As The Vampire Trucker
sucks her blood, Rose becomes lightheaded, since he only requires a small amount of blood not enough to kill his victims only his enemies. Once again he calls his faithful cabbie Sal, flips him a $100.00 bill and puts Rose in the cab, upon arrival at her residence she has no memory of the evening except a tall dark stranger dressed in black.
The Vampire Trucker
steps up into his rig, turns up his music, pours himself another whisky and reflects back on his conquest of the evening. He swallows the last of his drink, kicks off his boots, closes his eyes and with Rose on his mind drifts off to sleep.
It’s Tuesday morning and the sun is shining bright, so bright that when it moves across The Vampire Trucker’s
eyes he wakes up. He takes a few minutes to straighten up the cab of his rig, puts up the whisky glasses, throws the trash away and makes himself some coffee. He has an easy days drive today, just a short 765 miles until he reaches Ontario, CA., where he will stop for the night, since there really isn’t any place to stay in LA and he has to deliver first thing
