My Beautiful Daughter
Preface
As a registered nurse, I have always worked in what is known as a women’s world,
so I have not been exposed to the problems confronting women in the work world.
There have been problems being a working mother but in the very beginning, my husband has shared responsibilities such as cooking; grocery shopping; car pooling for the children; doctor’s appointments, etc.,. He and I fell into our roles very naturally. As a salesman, he had more free time, but being a nurse, I was the one who had the task of handling illnesses, guiding the children and dealing with their psychological needs.
Cleaning is very seldom shared but my husband does do dishes and scrubbing when necessary. The one problem that does exist, however, are the comments from acquaintances about a man doing woman’s work.
I personally have argued against this attitude for over twenty years.
Being a working mother has increased my children’s sense of responsibility and both my husband and children show pride in my accomplishments. It has given me a sense of individuality and independence, but I still need love, caring and someone to depend on.
I feel our family has been strengthened in unity and equality over the years because of my ability to realize my personhood
and my husband’s acceptance of a sharing partner in the family without thought of sexual roles.
DEDICATED TO MY PARENTS - 50th WEDDING ANNIVERSARY
LOVE
WE POLISHED OUR SHOES, SO WHITE AND SO BRIGHT
JUST THE TWO OF US THERE, IN THE MORNING SUNLIGHT
THEN PUT THEM IN ROWS, MY MOM AND I
OUT ON THE BACK PORCH, FOR THE SUN TO DRY
AND IN LATE AFTERNOON, WE TOOK A SHORT WALK
TO DROP IN ON FRIENDS TO VISIT AND TALK
MY DRESSES WERE STARCHED SO CRISP AND SMART
BY A MOTHER’S HANDS WITH LOVE IN HER HEART
AND THEN THERE WAS DADDY, WHO TOWERED IN HEIGHT
FOR WHEN THINGS WENT WRONG, HE MADE IT ALL RIGHT
HE FIXED ALL THE TOYS AND MENDED THEM WELL
AND MY CHILDISH FEARS, HE COULD ALWAYS DISPEL
ENCOURAGEMENT THEY GAVE, TO DRY MANY A TEAR
FOR WHEN IN MY TEENS, I COULDN’T HEAR
SO ON THIS DAY, I HONOR THIS PAIR
WHO GAVE ME SUCH LOVE AND PARENTAL CARE.
AND BECAUSE THEY’VE GIVEN TO ME THEIR BEST
I PRAY FROM THE HEART THAT THEY’LL ALWAYS BE BLEST.
