ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
I owe the completion of this book to the many persons who encouraged and gave me information about the great Tuburu. I am especially grateful to the following:
The late chaplain of the Rivers State University of Science and Technology Catholic Chaplaincy Rev. Fr. Udiakabong E.Umoren, who started me off by insisting that I read some biographies before commencing the research. In addition to giving me a couple of biographical books, he also suggested an outline and counseled that I endeavor to ‘situate things in context’ at all times.
Dr. Tipa Tom Tuburu, who patiently answered questions contained in a long questionnaire I sent to him and kept giving me updates over a period of ten years; the time it took me to complete my research.
Late Chief Victor Alale also provided invaluable information and patiently read through the manuscript, making useful corrections and observations.
Mr. Napolean Alale, who continues to be a worthy ally was the rock upon which my research was founded. He it was, who took all the pictures of Tuburu’s fighting tools used in this book. He also provided regular updates and tidbits about Tuburu’s awesome powers.
Many thanks to late Ebomo John Dorgu for his insight and contributions. I am also grateful to Mr. Wenepre Nanade and late Chief Clifford Nekade for their contibutions. I owe a debt of gratitude to the erudite Professor Joe Ebiware for his eagle-eyed proofreading. Mbana-O!
Thanks a million, to late Chief Naitri Ezonbodo, alias Nainai Power, for the enthusiasm and support he showed at the beginning of the project. The late Coleman Tuburu, alias mandolley, also deserves thanks for the encouragement he gave me. Thanks also to Mrs. Igbokwe Chioma for typing the manuscript.
INTRODUCTION
The name TUBURU is a familiar one to most Izon (Ijaw) speaking people not necessarily as the name of an individual but as a description of some Ijaw clans living along the Nun River. However, the TUBURU referred to in this book is the name of a man, perhaps the greatest warrior the Tarakiri clan of the Niger Delta has ever known. This colorful personality was born in Agbere in present day Bayelsa State, Nigeria, at an unknown date and died in 1895. I began hearing stories about his exploits several decades ago and decided to do a little research on him to assuage my curiosity and possibly, to unravel the TRUE TUBURU.
Information gathering began in earnest, in 1994. Questionnaire, oral history, literature review and colonial records formed the methodology. The main data was supplied by direct descendants of Tuburu. Dr. Tipa Tom Tuburu, a grandson of Tuburu; late Chief Victor Alale, a great grandson of Tuburu; Mr. Napoleon Alale, another great grandson of Tuburu and many others from the community, who had heard about Tuburu from their parents and grandparents. It is worthy of note that the oral accounts have remained fairly consistent in spite of the passage of time.
Tuburu was, from all accounts, a simple, yet complex man. He lived according to the laws of nature, as understood by ancient Izons. Incredible powers were and are usually bestowed on those who seek to understand the truth in their environment and Tuburu took full advantage of this and was truly blessed. Life in his day was full and exciting as it is today and in some cases even more so. The people lived in harmony with nature and it rewarded them with secrets that protected them from fearsome enemies of the natural, supernatural, inanimate and animate kinds.
The traditional beliefs of the people were based as usual,
