    Foreword

Our first book was all about numbers, the second about people, the third about music and the fourth about language. We now present our first quiz book which should be of interest to anyone of a quizzical nature but should also be of a general interest to all.

Readers should be aware that lists like these are never complete and it’s possible that more than the odd error may have crept in so if you propose to use any of the information contained herein, please remember that it is your own responsibility to verify it before such use.

All of this information is freely available in the public domain so feel free to use to use parts of it in any quiz, but please include an appropriate attribution.

The authors are grateful for the input of Angel Liszt and Margaret Gabica in the production of this book.

We have generally stuck with the simplified English alphabet and apologise to those who like their accents, graves and cedillas. Remember – this is not Wikipedia!

    Baselines

Everyone gains knowledge in different ways; some prefer visual aids whilst others favour the spoken word. Current mediums, especially those on-line, provide a variety of means to access information but there is one fundamental underlying principle – you need a framework in which to place remembered facts otherwise they tend to get mixed up and hence confused or even forgotten.

We are firm believers in the related principles of benchmarks and baselines and give the following as an example if you wish to learn about British History.

Since 1066 and The Norman Invasion (a benchmark) there have been eight royal Houses in Britain and these form the baseline for remembering the monarchs around which much of English (hence British and World) history has been centred.

Norman; Plantagenet; Lancaster; York; Tudor; Stuart; Hanover; Windsor (was Saxe-Coburg Gotha)

To remember these a simple mnemonic suffices:

No plan like yours to study history wisely

Once embedded in the brain, ordering the individual monarchs becomes a lot simpler. Start with the Normans then jump
