INTRODUCTION
17697.jpgThe object of this book is to give an insight into how beneficial a natural fibre can be.
The author lays claim to the knitting in this book. Knitting is a craft that men, women, boys and girls can all do. At sometime over the ages, many have learned to knit. They may have continued using the craft as a relaxing past time, or become a professional designer with simple or elaborate designs, added to their fame.
To achieve this one needs a fibre of quality and pliable thread.’ So what better for the purpose, than WOOL? ‘All over the world the people are knitting’… Knitting and wool has always been in vogue. It is a natural fibre.
A knitter cannot deny they have at sometime produced a new stitch; through knitting a mistake in the pattern at hand. The outcome; knitting later a design of their own if the stitch is remembered. Best of all it was met with favourable comments when used for a garment.
Many heard ‘knitters are sissy’ and would hide their needles or spinning wheel by saying ‘It’s my mums.’ Instead of taking it as a figure of speech it was taken literally, so never again did the knitting needles appear, or not until many years later.
Peer pressure does rear its ugly head. Nowadays many worldwide male and female designers, have developed brilliant designs using this natural fibre, the ‘put downs’ from the past forgotten. All knitters have learnt a craft which has given them a special knowledge, for they will automatically see the potential of this universal craft. It hasn’t stopped there; it may be the beginning of a livelihood, with accomplishments, achieving outstanding awards. This is the focus of the Ashford family, who own a spinning wheel and loom factory in Ashburton New Zealand. Progress is progress, and adding to this a very large range of wool available in many brilliant colours.
Sheep, Alpaca, Angora (goats), silk, cotton, and there certainly are more, natural fibres and their potential has been promoted on and off
