About this ebook

This book follows a year in the life of a young boy from his ninth birthday until his tenth birthday. A mix of humor, drama, sadness, and enlightenment tie the story together.

The period runs from April 6, 1963, through April 6, 1964. The story is set in the small northeast Georgia town of Toccoa. The author uses actual events and experiences to help develop a fictional story that incorporates subtle, positive values when practical.

It is an intriguing book for growing ten-year-olds as well as for anyone who has ever turned ten years old.

I am an old man now, and each year seems to fly by. It has not always been that way. When I was a boy, the years seemed to last a long time, especially if I was waiting on something. This story is about one of those years. I was 9 years old and it seemed like it took ten years to turn 10.

    The May Pole Dance

T here I was, sitting in the shoe department of the Belk- Gallant department store in downtown Toccoa, Georgia. Every year, for as long as I could remember, my Aunt Mary would take me to town to get a new pair of tennis shoes for my birthday. Well, it was April 6, 1963, which meant I was 9 years old and finishing my third grade year at Big A Elementary School. Now, I did not normally enjoy going shopping for clothes, but I LOVED picking out my new pair of shoes. I was pretty fast anyway, but with my new shoes, I could fly. I could hardly wait to show them off to my friends at school. Much to my dismay, my friends were not nearly as excited about my new shoes as I was. My shoe show-off day really was just another day.

The school year was winding down with the usual end of year stuff. Mrs. Dell was a good teacher, but I thought both she and I could survive just fine without seeing each other over the summer. I was starting to day dream about running and playing with my cousins and friends in our hillside neighborhood when Mrs. Dell brought me back to reality with a sharp, Grady Farmer, you will be partnered with Rosemary Fitch. Whoa, what just happened? While I was daydreaming, Mrs. Dell had saddled me with Rosemary Fitch as my May Pole partner. You see, someone had the bright idea that it would be cute to have the 3rd grade classes perform a real May Pole dance. I didn’t really know what a May Pole dance was, but I KNEW I did not want to be partnered with a girl for anything. Oh, Rosemary was nice enough, but she was a girl. Well, there was nothing to be done about it now. After all, how bad could it be? It turned out to be terrible! Not only did we have to practice during our recess, but we even had to hold hands.
