    INTRODUCTION

I have always loved hymns. Perhaps it is my love of the written word that draws me to their poetry. Part of the joy of writing this book was discovering unfamiliar hymns and revisiting old favorites. Their lyrics are timeless; expressing truths and experiences which transcend culture and age. There is something about it that ignites the soul. This selection of hymns sparked in me a fresh hunger for God’s Word, inspiring these devotional reflections. The heart of this book is best summed up by the Apostle Paul’s familiar declaration:

"I know how to get along and live humbly [in difficult times], and I also know how to enjoy abundance and live in prosperity. In any and every circumstance I have learned the secret [of facing life], whether well-fed or going hungry, whether having an abundance or being in need. I can do all things [which He has called me to do] through Him who strengthens and empowers me [to fulfill His purpose—I am self-sufficient in Christ’s sufficiency; I am ready for anything and equal to anything through Him who infuses me with inner strength and confident peace.]"

    (Philippians 4:12-13 AMP, emphasis mine)

This collection of devotions is a call to grace- to laying down our own assumptions, fears, failures, and boundaries and living in the abundant grace available to us in Christ. I was at first wary to call this a devotional- often that implies a daily reading, which is not necessarily a negative thing, but may not leave room for the mediation and reflection over days and weeks which solidifies our understanding and leads to transformative revelation. I encourage you to throw out your notion of what a devotional is as you read this book. Don’t just try to get through it; if something resonates with you, allow yourself to park there for a while. Meditate on the lyrics of the hymn. Read and re-read the scriptures. Look for related scripture. My desire in writing this was to share my own journey of refreshing, repenting, and strengthening as I listened to these hymns and connected them with the truth in God’s word. I pray that in these pages we will find shared experiences and you too will be encouraged, challenged, and renewed.

"I pray that from his glorious, unlimited resources he will empower you with inner strength through his Spirit. Then Christ will make his home in your hearts as you trust in him. Your roots will grow down into God’s love and keep you strong. And may you have the power to understand, as all God’s people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep his love is. May you experience the love of Christ, though it is too great to understand fully. Then you will be made complete with all the fullness of life and power that comes from God. Now all glory to God, who is able, through his mighty power at work within us, to accomplish infinitely more than we might ask or
