About this ebook

Knowing his final days are upon him and wanting to be with family, the great counselor Ishala returns to his hometown where he had spent many years healing wounds and providing hope to so many.

His beloved son Ezekiel sits with him through his last days, and together they share a sacred conversation in which the son asks his father to bestow upon him his wisdom regarding the human condition. The counselor—a man who has lived a life of love and service with each word he spoke and each breath he took—recounts parables and enriches his meaning through metaphor as he leaves his son with this beautiful parting gift.

Inspired by Kahlil Gibran’s The Prophet, Kevin MacNevin Clark presents deep meditative truths that will awaken your heart. This book is as much for those hurting as it is for the hopeful.

    In Appreciation

I would like to thank my beautiful family because family first! I thank my brave son, Abraham, the most emotionally intelligent five-year-old in this world. I thank my sweet daughter, Adelaide, a true artist who knows how to be silly. I thank my amazing daughter, Eve, for sharing her music with the world. I thank my badass wife, Allison, for granting me space and time, so I could put in the daily footwork to realize this book. I thank my brother for eagerly offering to help me in the editing process. I thank my father for believing in and being supportive of my vision. I thank my mother for never giving up on me; you have taught me that no one is a hopeless cause. I thank my best friend Aaron, who helped me bring this book to life with his generous support. I thank Rob for walking side by side with me on this path of seeking and doing the inside job these last eleven years. I thank God, who is the source of my creativity. I thank Carl, the very first therapist who meant anything to me. You saved my life, Carl, by giving me a safe space when I had none—and you were the first person I recall ever suggesting I write a book. I thank my therapist, Amanda; you remind me of all that I am capable of whether you know that or not. I thank all those who believe in me. I would not be where I am in this beautiful, messy journey without you all. I love you all, and yes, I mean ALL OF YOU, even you—actually especially you. Thank you!

    Coming Home

T here was a great counselor in Manasseh named Ishala. The story goes that he learned to heal his own wounds and shared that healing through his works. After his many years of giving back to others what he was once so freely given, Ishala felt tired knowing his final days were upon him.

He asked his children to take him to his old home so that he might spend his final days in the home he shared with his family, and where his beloved wife had passed away seven years past. His children attended to him as he lay in wait of his time coming. He smiled for he had no hard feelings.

He asked his son, Ezekiel, to go to the farmers market to get him jam, butter, and fresh bread. Now the people of Manasseh knew that Ishala had returned to end the journey of his passing through. When he was at the market, Ezekiel was bombarded by requests from various townsfolk, pleading they be granted permission
