Dear Reader,
Imagine you are shopping with your best friend, or your spouse, or one of your siblings, or perhaps your childhood nanny. Maybe one or both of your parents have offered to buy you a present and now you are standing inside a dimly lit little shop with a bare bulb glowing from the center of the long narrow space with shelves all the way up to the ceiling. Tucked between a bookstore and a market or café, this dusty old shop could be anywhere in the world: New York, London, or Bombay. It could be in the suburbs of Cairo, Shanghai, or even in Amsterdam.
The shelves are filled to capacity with rolled-up paper scrolls from all around the world, some new and many quite old. The bearded, ancient-looking man behind the counter welcomes you with a warm smile as he praises his merchandise with love and passion. Your inner security light turns green: you sense you can fully trust this man. He has the face of a person who knows what life is about. As you approach the counter, still a little hesitant, he needs only a slight invitation from you to share his favorite stories.
All these scrolls contain the pearls of wisdom that I have collected while traveling the world,
he starts. "But I won’t be here forever and I want you to have access to them so that you too can benefit from my lifetime of discoveries."
The scrolls he points at are well-priced and you can see there is something of interest for most anybody. "Please feel free to look around and choose one, for yourself. Then, pick one up to surprise your loved one, and an extra one to treat a beloved family member
