About this ebook

Recently unemployed, Carla takes up her friend Milly’s offer to house-sit her beach house and look after her dog Katie. Milly assures her that the guy staying there already has a girlfriend and won’t mess with Carla’s tender heart. Carla has come out of another toxic romantic relationship and doesn’t want her heart broken again.

Brit Craig is busy shooting for the lead role in a movie, and he’s not in the mood for having a strange woman in the beach house at such a busy time. But almost as soon as Carla arrives, he’s shocked at his intense attraction to her. Carla finds herself warming up to Craig’s easy and friendly manner way faster than she’d ever have anticipated. And, well, his girlfriend is just a relationship of convenience. But she doesn’t recognise that he’s a Hollywood celebrity.

Is a non-celeb from another country worth Craig risking his reputation and precious time? Carla fears the worst about relationships. Is it even safe to risk an affair with the cute, mysterious friend of a friend?

    Chapter One

Ugh, 2020 was bad, but I was hoping 2021 would be better, Carla said on the video call with her best friend Milly. It’s ended up badly for me after I lost my job.

She headed towards the kitchen to pour herself a drink. She couldn’t exactly call Grapetiser Dutch courage, but it worked for her. She hated admitting defeat. She’d thought that somehow, miraculously, the Covid-19 pandemic recession wouldn’t affect her. She should’ve been more diligent with her savings for a rainy day.

When did that happen? Milly asked.

Two weeks ago. She stood with her head buried in the fridge, forgetting why she was there.

    "Why didn’t you tell me?

The phone now down on the kitchen counter, she grabbed a glass from the cabinet. Look, I was hoping something would come up straight away. I don’t like to be a burden to people.

Why aren’t you looking at me?

I’m pouring myself a drink. She dropped several ice cubes into the glass.

That sound is deafening. Carla, listen to me, are you doing okay?

I’m really fine. I’ve been sending my CV out all over Pretoria. She poured the Grapetiser, the foam building up around the ice.

Actually, I have a job for you.

What do you mean? Yes, Milly was a successful business owner, but she’d learned the hard way that friendship and business didn’t mix.

Don’t sound so wary. I don’t mean at the office, but a temporary thing. Obviously, you’re not that desperate and must have a decent—

In fact, her heart was pounding with renewed hope. If Milly had a paying job for her, even temporary, she would take it. This worry gnawing at her every second of every day would be put on hold for a bit, giving her more time to find something more permanent. If Milly wasn’t going to make her do something crazy like paint her house.

What’s up? She took a sip of her drink. The cool, bubbly sensation eased her, just a little.

    I’m going away with Josh.

    Ooh, going away? Really?

Milly’s face went all dreamy, and she twiddled with a piece of her hair that had fallen out her perfect ponytail. "Now that everyone’s been vaccinated
