    Introduction

    Anxious? Who me? I would never have pegged myself as an anxious person, but the signs were always there. As a teenager, my heart would pound, and I would break out in a sweat every time I attended a social event. I’d only get as far as the door before I turned on my heels and ran back home.

    I thought worrying was normal. I would worry about my health, safety, and my lack of friends, writing exams, finances, and the future. Somehow, I learnt to navigate temporary everyday social situations despite my anxiety, made it to adulthood, and got married.

    But then I moved to live in two different countries where I didn’t speak the language. On top of that I gave birth to my two sons during two separate military takeovers in a foreign country. Slipping into survival mode where I coped became second nature to me.
