    Jenny and the Fireman

What’s all the excitement about? Jenny asked as she walked up to the fireman standing on the sidewalk, his back towards her. She could see smoke rising up from the house across the street from her apartment complex, but there didn’t appear to be any visible flames. A couple more firemen had just gone inside the home with a hose, while two others were hauling some equipment to the porch, leaving this guy by himself.

The fireman turned around and Jenny was immediately mesmerized by his liquid blue eyes and his blond hair, both of which were very similar to her own. It appears to be a kitchen fire, so it shouldn’t be anything too serious, he said, looking straight at Jenny, who found herself suddenly blushing.

So why aren’t you over there helping them out? Jenny asked with a smile.

I’m just a trainee, so for now I’m responsible for keeping people back out of the way, he said, pointing to a patch on his left chest that said Trainee. Directly beneath it was a name badge with the name Elliot on it.

Okay Elliot, when do you get to put out fires yourself? Jenny inquired with a grin and with one eyebrow raised slightly.

The fireman laughed and replied, My last name is Elliot, and my first name is Michael. To answer your question, I have a couple more weeks of training before I can go in and take care of a fire.

Hey Trainee, one of the other firefighters shouted. Start picking up some of the gear and get it loaded back on the truck.

Michael turned and half waved at the fireman and then turned back to Jenny, only to find that she was walking back across the street to her apartment complex. Damn, he thought to himself, I didn’t even get her name.

    ***

The following day Jenny decided to stop at the grocery store on her way home from her last class. She had been putting it off for a week, but now there were just too many things she needed, so she couldn’t put it off any longer. She was mindlessly wondering up and down each aisle to see if she spotted anything that she might need, food or otherwise. She had started a list back at the apartment a couple of days ago, but she couldn’t remember what she did with it, so now she was just winging it, again.

Hey, hold up, she heard someone call out as she pushed her shopping cart around the corner and started down another aisle. She stopped and backed up to see the fireman from the previous day coming towards her, pushing his own cart.

Jenny waited and watched as he casually strolled down the grocery aisle, and she couldn’t help smiling at the sight of him. When he had almost reached her, she said, Well, if it isn’t fireman Elliot, first name Michael.

Michael smiled and replied, Great, you remembered.

Jenny just tilted her head slightly and started pushing her cart back down the aisle she had been on, leaving Michael standing behind her. He hesitated a moment and then pushed his cart up beside hers.

You know, I didn’t get your name yesterday, he said, trying to make eye contact.

As her eyes casually scanned the shelves on each side of the aisle, Jenny responded with That would most likely be because I never gave you my name.

Michael stopped a moment and then scampered to catch up. Well that hardly seems fair. I gave you my name.

Actually, Jenny said as she stopped her cart and reached for a can of green beans, you were wearing your name and I read it out loud. As she put the can in her cart she looked at him and added, It was right there for the taking. With that, she started moving slowly down the aisle once more, her eyes still scanning the shelves.

An elderly woman pushing her cart was coming towards them, so Michael had to pull his cart over and behind Jenny. Okay, you got me there. Would you mind if I asked your name?

No, I wouldn’t mind at all. I’m not sure I’ll give it to you, but you are welcome to ask, Jenny said, trying to suppress a giggle.

Michael laughed and pushed his cart around hers and then moved over in front of her. He released his cart and took hold of the front end of her cart, causing her to stop. Looking straight at her, he said with a smile, Hello, my name is Michael Elliot. Would you please grant me the privilege of your name?

Smiling back, she replied, Hello Michael Elliot, my name is Jenny.

    Is that all? he asked.

Jenny pulled back on her basket, prompting him to release it, and then added, That’s all you get for now. Just Jenny. She then pushed her cart around him and continued to make her way down the aisle, leaving him standing there looking confused.

Michael was sure that there had been a spark between them the day before, but now he wasn’t quite so sure. It was such a wild fluke that he had seen her here at the grocery store, and he felt like he just had to get to know her. Now he wasn’t so sure that she was interested in him at all.

When Jenny reached the end of the aisle, she turned back to see Michael standing where she had left him. He had one hand on his cart as he stood
