    Preface

I am not a poet myself, but I take particular joy in the wonders of poetry. Often it is even better than prose in crossing borders and uniting various cultures. Many of these fine poems by the Chinese author Lucy Luo were written while she was residing in London, yet their message of nature and the changes of season and the yearning for love are universal.

As someone who has traveled from China to England and then to America, she has written widely and well of her experiences on three continents, but I think it is in these poems that her real self is best revealed. The slow arrival of spring, the depressing autumn rains, and the hope that love will come with the first buds of nature – these are sentiments familiar to us all, whatever our nationalities.

These poems are an excellent introduction to a writer who had kept close ties with her Chinese homeland while venturing into the vast world around us. If they lead you to seek out her prose and other writings, you will not be disappointed. You will discover the same wonderful world that Lucy has experienced and written about. You will see the sadness and ultimate joy of nature, and of love.
