    A new town

The day started late for both Lola and her mother, Jordan. They ate a breakfast of croissants and juice, and still in their pajamas, they looked around at their new apartment. Boxes with belongings were piled all over the small apartment, some empty and others full, like giant pieces of a block-building set. On top of the tables and furniture that came with the apartment were unpacked clothes and shoes, souvenirs and dishes and packing material. For two days they had been unpacking, wondering if there was ample room in such a small apartment for all they owned. Moving homes became second nature; they had a system, but they still hated it. The truth was that the seventh time in two years was taking a toll on them. If packing was tiring, unpacking was worse, and a break was needed. Lola opened the curtains and the window in her room and looked out. The sun illuminated the upper floor of the neighboring apartment building, and the blueness of the sky above her third-floor vantage, caught her eye. Perfect for a walk. I will ask mother, she thought.

Jordan and Lola decided to discover the little town they now call home. She put on a light jacket; it felt fresh outside. Lola did the same. They went out and walked toward the town center, with the obligatory stop at each shop they encountered. It was not a fluke Jordan had chosen this small town. She had taken her time and had researched the many small towns located not too far from the big city before deciding that this small village would be the perfect place to set roots. In between the village and the city, acting like a buffer, stood vast tracks of forested land with many trails for walking or bicycling. Moving her daughter around often stressed both of them, but what really worried Jordan was Lola’s difficulty in making friends. She promised herself they would not move again until Lola’s teenage years. She dreaded the idea of taking her away from any new friends, not that she had many. Jordan often wondered if it was her fault that Lola never seemed to have the opportunity to make meaningful friendships. She couldn’t help but feel that her daughter was missing out
