    Sally Ann Grainger admired the spectacular cake she’d just finished decorating for her best friend’s wedding. Sally had baked the three tier cake from scratch using only the freshest ingredients and imbuing the batter with her finest spells for health, happiness, and enduring love—though she’d been careful to limit the love spell to Amy and her soon-to-be husband Aaron. No need to include all the guests who would enjoy a slice of cake in that particular incantation!

    And now the glorious confection was complete. Three tiers of rich, layered spice cake, iced smooth in almond buttercream frosting and decorated with sprays of fresh and fondant flowers cascading from the top tier. In deference to the fall season, Sally had tinted the frosting a pale peach and chosen fall blooms in vibrant reds, yellows, and oranges. Her fondant rosebuds were perfect and the marzipan leaves added an elegant finishing touch. Truly, Amy’s wedding cake was a testament to Sally’s skills, both as a baker and as a kitchen witch.

    Sally Ann’s magic was homey and comforting. She was a wizard in the kitchen. Her soufflés never fell. Her pies always had perfect, flaky crusts.
