Introduction
When I started the year 2021, I never dreamed of writing a book. I have never considered myself a writer because I concluded that some people are called to do just that, not me. I just wanted to practice medicine. But, by the end of April 2021, the story changed, and I started having a burden to write; stories, books, blogs, articles, etc.
This book was born from a vision, and all the stories are God-inspired. Some came as a title while reading the Bible, and some; a blend of dreams at night.
I hope to write stories that children can relate to and learn from, but they need adults to work through the worksheets.
I hope that they find light, joy, and sheer pleasure reading through the lines.
Yours truly,
Titilayo Kayode-Alabi.
The journey to the village
CHAPTER 1
Timothy, nine years and Eliza, six years were excited to take the 6 hours journey to the village to see great grandmother Lois ---- fondly called GREAT GRAN
by the children. They had met four years ago in the village, and Tim still recalls most of the stories she had told him. Oh, it would be an exciting holiday, he exclaimed while Eliza smiled, trying to keep up with his excitement- well, she was just two years old when she visited the village last and did not have many memories of the visit. Nevertheless, Tim looked forward to her big bearly hug, the oriki
(Adio) he calls her, the meals from her cozy kitchen with the stove that always seems to have something cooking on it at all times.
Most importantly, Tim looked forward to the nighttime stories with great gran under the tree with her kerosene lamp burning softly, the birds chirping in the nest, and the crickets chirping in the nearby bushes while she sat on her bamboo recliner chair.
Oh!!! What fun it would be for the kids!
Home at last
We are here, their dad announced. Home at last, he exclaimed.
The kids were excited to be home. Tim eagerly looked through the window, hoping to see great gran at the door. There she is, he let out a sigh of relief. Great gran promised to be at the door when they got to the village, and he was the first to jump out of the car as soon as dad parked. Eliza followed him with just as much level of excitement. Great gran had her arms stretched out and wide to welcome the kids. She was happy to see them. Both parents joined the kids; dad prostrated; hello Maami
, he said in Yoruba, while mum knelt on the floor as she said her greeting.
The house was old but clean. There was a pleasant smell in the parlour mixed with the scent of boiling spicy stew emanating from the kitchen. Great gran had asked the town gardener for some fresh flowers, which she carefully arranged in a white flower vase with a chapped edge placed on the table in the centre of the house.
She encouraged them all to take a shower and rest a bit before dinner got served. Dad did not realize he was hungry until the mention of food, by great gran.
There was no story to be told today because the adults had a lot of catching up to do, so Tim and Eliza sat quietly beside great gran as she chatted with dad and mum. At the same time, they responded to the occasional questions directed at them.
Soon the kids were asleep on the sofa in the sitting room, and mum carried them gently to the room.
