A couple in London. The wife is incapable of bearing children. Lavanya looked at the wall clock.

    Five fifteen.

Damu had said he would come at five thirty. He is very punctual and would surely be on time.

White Organza printed saree with a matching blouse; small pearl studs in her ears; lightly made-up face with a small black bindi and light lipstick…. Her shoulder length hair tied in a ponytail…

Lavanya sprayed her favorite Chanel perfume, picked her bag, and went down.

There were beads of sweat on her forehead and upper lips. Coming out of the AC was torturous.

She went out to the verandah and sat on the swing.

Spotting her, the gardener who was watering the lawn, dropped the hose pipe, came to her and asked, Shall I put a chair on the lawn?

No, I am going out… She said,

Seeing Lavanya sitting on the swing, the cook came out and asked, Are you leaving now? Shall I get you your coffee?

It was twenty-five years since Appu had come to their house.

The small business that Lavanya’s father, Kailasam had started years ago had grown into one of the country’s largest companies. Appu had been an inseparable part of this journey.

He had joined their house as a cook on Lavanya’s fifth birthday. The cook-master relationship between Appu and Kailasam had transformed, and Appu was now a close family member.

After Lavanya's mother's untimely death… Kailasam deciding not to get married again… bringing up Lavanya single handedly with all the care and affection…. Lavanya’s wedding with Ram… and Kailasam's death in a plane crash last year…

Appu had been a constant witness to all the happenings in the family over the years.

Lavanya smiled gently, looked up at Appu and,

No Mama, I don’t want coffee. The afternoon lunch is still sitting in my stomach. Just give me a glass of cold water.

She drank the water Appu handed her.

Will you have dinner at home?

Yes, Damu too might join me for dinner. Please make something he likes, Mama.

    Appu nodded silently.

Seeing Damu’s car enter the gate, Lavanya walked down the steps.

The car stopped in the portico.

    Hi there… you look nice!

Lavanya smiled and got into the front seat.

The car went around the semicircular lawn and came to the gate. The watchman stood up and saluted.

Once they left Poes Garden and reached the main road, Damu increased the speed.

Shall we go to the drive-in restaurant for a cup of coffee and talk in leisure?

    Mm

The car entered the drive-in restaurant premises. They parked the car under a tree and sat quietly till the waiter came and took their order.

    Lavanya said breaking the silence,

    So?

Damu turned and looked at her intently.

As he gazed at Lavanya’s unwavering face, he was filled with awe. What an extraordinary woman she was! He thought as always.

You said you wanted to tell me something. Why don’t you tell me about it Damu?

Yes, I will… don’t be in a hurry, Lavy. I have been thinking about what you told me for the past two days. I was worried if it would work out fine. But, once I thought deeply, I could see it from your perspective. You are not like other ordinary women…you have always thought and behaved differently. I have seen you make decisions wisely and rationally for all these years. Hence, you have my whole hearted support.

Lavy smiled with her eyes wide.

‘Thank you for your compliments’ the smile seemed to say…

The waiter came and placed the coffee mugs on the tray fixed to the car door. Damu handed Lavanya a cup and picked up one for himself. They sipped the hot coffee in silence for a few moments. Damu said,

Lavy, there is a girl who is exactly like what you are looking for… but I will have to find out if she is ready.

Lavanya’s eyes fell on the children playing in the park close by. There were two on the sea-saw, four on the swing.

    Tell me in detail, Damu.

Lavanya was unfazed and in control even when discussing the most difficult and important issues in life. She was truly admirable. How many women could be like her?

Damu felt very happy and spoke excitedly,

Her name is Menaka. She ran away from home aspiring to be an actress and has done some small, cheap, side roles in a few movies. She is young and from my limited interactions, I can say she seemed intelligent…

Your limited interactions…? What do you mean Damu? Lavanya teased him.

Hey, don’t try to badger me. Damu laughed aloud, understanding the purport of Lavanya’s comment and what she meant.

    Alright… go on…

I have known her for two years now… but nothing more than the fact that she is a beautiful, energetic young girl who works as an extra in films. I have had no personal interactions with her. You must have watched my film, ‘India Today’. Remember that scene where the temple sculptures come to life and a dancer is shown standing in the same pose as the sculpture? That was Menaka…

Lavanya remembered that scene and could recall Menaka. She was a young girl with a sculpted body, slim waist, and broad thighs. She was voluptuous and sensuous. Lavanya remembered noticing how beautiful
