    THE LEAST BEAUTIFULE OF THEM ALL

    There is no doubt that Marley was dead. This must be distinctly understood, or nothing wonderful can come of the story I am going to relate.

    THE WHOLE WORLD HAS MAGIC, but no place is more magical than the Great Forest of Lon, for it is the realm of the fairies. Even in the midst of winter the trees sparkle with ice crystals and the snow glints in the bright sunlight.

    At least, this is true now, but once there was a place in the forest where there was no sparkling and no glinting. The trees hung heavy with dull icicles and the snow lay in grey lumps on the ground. This was the home of Ebenzia. It was once the home of Ebenzia and Marley, but fairies do not remain as corporeal beings forever. Marley had passed beyond the mortal plane seven turnings of
