About this ebook
We have summarized the essential of this book by the author.
From the French Revolution conflicts began to occur between NATIONS, until the FIRST WORLD WAR. At that point, the conflict between nations was displaced by the IDEOLOGICAL conflict between fascism-Nazism, communism and liberal democracy, which was later limited to communism and liberal democracy (COLD WAR).
All these conflicts occurred within the WESTERN CIVILIZATION. With the end of the COLD WAR, the conflict will be between WESTERN CIVILIZATION and NON-WESTERN CIVILIZATIONS (which are no longer objects of Western colonialism).
For Huntington, CIVILIZATION is a CULTURAL entity, defined by common elements: language, history, religion, customs, institutions. CIVILIZATIONS constitute the most comprehensive CULTURAL GROUPING. For example, an inhabitant of Rome can be defined by different levels of IDENTITY: as Roman, as Italian, as Catholic, as European, as Westerner. The civilization to which he belongs (the Western one) is the broader level with which he identifies.

THE CLASH OF CIVILIZATIONS ?
The next conflict model
The author argues that GLOBAL POLICY is entering a new stage. Huntington's hypothesis is that the great conflicts and divisions will be CULTURAL.
THE MAIN CONFLICTS OF WORLD POLITICS WILL BE BETWEEN NATIONS AND GROUPS OF DIFFERENT CIVILIZATIONS
CIVILIZATIONS can include SUB-CIVILIZATIONS. WESTERN CIVILIZATION includes, for Huntington, two important subdivisions: the European and the North American. The Islamic civilization has three: the Arab, the Turkish and the Malay.
Why will civilizations clash
The world will be shaped by the interaction between seven or eight civilizations: WESTERN, CONFUCIAN, JAPANESE, ISLAMIC, HINDU, SLAV-ORTHODOX, LATIN AMERICAN, and possibly AFRICAN.
This will be the case for several reasons, which Huntington lists.
1) The differences between CIVILIZATIONS ARE BASIC (language, tradition, culture, history, religion). These differences will not disappear anytime soon and, over the centuries, they have generated the longest and most violent conflicts.
2) There is a growing INTERACTION between civilizations. IMMIGRATIONS are generating hostility. For example, the French are hostile to North African immigration and are more receptive to Polish immigration.
3) The processes of economic and social modernization are overwhelming the ANCESTRAL LOCAL IDENTITIES and also weaken the NATION-STATE as a source of IDENTITY. In much of the world, RELIGION is filling the gap, through RELIGIOUS FUNDAMENTALISMS.
4) WEST is at a peak of power, but at the same time, partly due to the extension of that power, there is a return of NON-WESTERN civilizations TO THE ROOTS. The Easternization
trend in Japan, p. ex.
5) CULTURAL DIFFERENCES are less mutable and, therefore, less negotiable than political or economic ones. It
