The Lord's Prayer Leader Guide: The Meaning and Power of the Prayer Jesus Taught
()
About this ebook
The power and significance of the prayer Jesus taught.
Most Christians know the Lord’s Prayer by heart. We pray it often, at different times and in different settings. We remember it as the prayer that Jesus taught his disciples. But do we really understand and appreciate the meaning and power of its words, what we ask of God each time we pray it?
When the disciples asked Jesus how to pray, Jesus gave them this prayer. He likely taught it to his followers often, not just one time. He never intended the Lord’s Prayer to be a museum piece, framed and placed on a mantel or in a display case. It was Jesus teaching God’s people, through his disciples, how to pray.
In The Lord’s Prayer: The Meaning and Power of the Prayer Jesus Taught, pastor and bestselling author Adam Hamilton guides us to really know—and really pray—the Lord’s Prayer. He explores each of its rich lines and their meaning in the Bible, illuminating what we ask of God and what we ask of ourselves through its words. And he teaches us how to use it as a pattern for our own prayer life.
The Leader Guide contains everything needed to guide a group through the six-week study including session plans, activities, and discussion questions, as well as multiple format options.

TO THE LEADER
In The Lord’s Prayer, Adam Hamilton invites readers to consider closely the words and themes of the prayer Jesus taught his disciples. The prayer is meant by Jesus,
he writes, to shape our lives and, through us, to shape and change the world.
This guide is designed to help leaders of adult Christian education groups to discuss and learn from Hamilton’s book together. It will prove most valuable when used as a supplement to rather than a replacement for Hamilton’s book.
Its six sessions follow the same structure as Hamilton’s book:
Session 1—Our Father, Who Art in Heaven, Hallowed Be Thy Name
Participants will compare and contrast the two versions of the Lord’s Prayer found in the New Testament, consider what it means to address God as Our Father,
and identify practical ways to hallow
God’s name.
Session 2—Whose Will Be Done?
Participants will consider Jesus as a model of discerning and doing God’s will and will discuss ways they and their congregations can do God’s will in the world today.
Session 3–Our Daily Bread
Participants will take an honest look at how much of their eating is essential, examine the biblical story of the wilderness manna as context for the Lord’s Prayer, and determine ways they can answer other people’s prayers for both physical and spiritual bread.
Session 4–Forgive … As We Forgive
Participants will define what forgiveness does and does not mean and will interpret two of Jesus’s parables as they seek ways to extend forgiveness to others.
Session 5–And Lead Us, Not into Temptation
Participants will explore two key biblical stories about temptation (the humans and the serpent in Eden, and the temptations Jesus faced in the wilderness) and consider the armor of God
in Ephesians 6 as an image for withstanding temptations.
Session 6–For THINE Is the Kingdom, Power, and Glory
Participants will examine the importance of praising God in prayer and
