Here's to the Heartbreakers - Sumaiya Ahmed
for everyone who has ever had their heart broken – it gets better. <3
dear reader,
this short story is more than just about a girl coming face to face with the person who broke her heart – it is a story about overcoming adversity and heartbreak, even when we think we can’t. it’s never really easy to move on, to take that step into the future or try to let go – with every passing moment, the pain lives on. we feel it in our lungs, in our chests, in our stomachs. we feel like we’re dying.
but that pain is a good thing: it means we’re alive.
and even though it hurts, even though we want with everything inside of us, for it to stop – just know you’ll come out stronger.
there are some loves we may never move on from, some loves that we may never let go of because that person has irrevocably and forever changed us and our lives, has made a home inside of our hearts – because that person was truly & genuinely the one... but it does get easier. to keep going. to keep trying. to keep breathing.
it takes a village to feel ok again, to smile, to want to get out of bed and open the curtains and feel the sun on your face. the love of your friends will save you. and when you think you won’t be ok again, believe me when i say: you will be. in time, you will be.

AT TIMES THERE ARE CERTAIN ASPECTS OF YOUR LIFE THAT YOU WISH TO FORGET, simply because they are far too painful to think about. Those are the memories that haunt you, sending a rush of embarrassment and anger coursing through your veins. Though most of those memories aren’t laced with pain; they bubble with a warm, gooey feeling of complete happiness, a warmth that leaves a scorching trail of heat in its absence. It is the fleeting emotion of complete perfection, an emotion that has you so high on life, on Cloud Nine, that nothing could have brought you down from that unadulterated feeling of immense joy.
I hated remembering those times.
Hated remembering just how pathetically weak I had once been. It was amazing how one person could have such power over you, a strong, unbreakable hold that you could not escape from, no matter how fast or how far you tried to run. You just wouldn’t be able to escape their grasp, for they have you bound to them. Remembering those times when all I had ever felt was complete and utter happiness irritated me, which may just be the reason why I locked away all those memories in a box, never to be opened again. Or so I had hoped. After all, when you think about something so beautiful too many times, it loses its meaning and the feeling of perfection isn’t rare anymore. I treasured those feelings. Despite the ache, the longing and desire that burned through me like liquid fire, I shook those thoughts away. I couldn’t let myself be hypnotized by his lies. Not this time.
I was stronger now. I hadn’t needed him back then, and I don’t need him now. He had blinded me with his lies, mesmerized me with every word. And it was him who had captured my heart; he was the one that had dragged me into the inevitable pull of love’s sticky-sweet clutches. I couldn’t escape, couldn’t run, and sure as hell couldn’t deny the way he made me feel inside; there was no way I could deny the passion that lingered in my veins, burning me from the inside out. I couldn’t deny the
