    My Sister’s Husband

    Adeline and Alexander.

    Alex and Addie.

They lived happily. Ever. After. The End.

Father, Tilly, my sister said when she first brought Alexander home. They stood in the living room, posing like a picture. My sister, technically she was my step sister, Adeline is gorgeous. Slender, a heart shaped face, beautiful auburn hair. She was always put together, always proper, always presentable. As was I, Addie’s mother, had instilled that in her. My mother, Addie’s step mother, had instilled it in me and our father had carried that on after our mothers had died.

However, Adeline, she was always much more put together than me. And, with about one-third the effort it seemed. So there she stood, perfect, put together Addie and... Alexander.

Well, Father said, rising from his chair by the fire, striding across the room, hand extended, how fine to meet you at last. They shook hands, father patted his back, there were words of welcome, words that I just didn’t hear. I was fixated on Alexander. Tall, striking, well built, captivating Alexander.

Tilly, my father said, snapping me from my revery, come say hello.

I rose from my chair, feeling as if I was enveloped in a dream. I felt myself float across the floor, extend my hand to him and smile. He smiled at me and it was dazzling. He took my hand, brought it gently to his lips and kissed it.

Your sister has told me endless stories about you, he said, what she failed to tell me was how incredibly lovely you are. I blushed. I could feel my entire body blush. Sometimes a man can say something like that and sound like a dirty old uncle or a fumbling, socially awkward parson. Alexander, however, sounded sincere and... lovely.

He stayed to dinner that night, told us stories of his time in the war, his family, his horses, which he said I could come and ride whenever I desired. He was sweet, funny, compelling and so, so handsome. When Adeline walked him to his carriage that night, I sat in my window and watched them say good night in the moon light.

When Addie rose on her toes to kiss his cheek, I put myself in her place. I placed my lips against Alexander’s cheek. I pressed the palm of my hand against his chest. I looked into his eyes. When he snapped the reigns, when the horses snorted and pulled the carriage away, my heart sank and longed for the time when I would see him again.

What do you think, Addie said, throwing open my door bounding in, not knocking, ‘isn’t he just... wonderful." She spun around and then dropped on her back onto my bed. She sighed and smiled. I laughed. Despite what I was thinking, kissing Alexander’s cheek, I was very, very happy for Addie.

I looked at her for a while, watching her play dream scenes out in her head. She had worked so hard. She had been father’s right hand after her mother passed. She had kept the house running, hired the servants, helped father move forward after my mother passed. She put her own life on hold to make sure I was still going to school, healthy and happy. She had done so much, so many selfless things that I believed if anyone deserved to be happy, it was Addie.

Although we had different mothers, I never once thought of Addie as anything but my own sister. When she started walking out in the evenings, different men stopping by to ask after her, I was sad, of course, but I was also pleased that she was finally going to have life of her own. My darling sister. She sat up quickly, looked at me with slight fear in her eyes.

You don’t like him, is that it, you don’t like him?

Addie, I said and laughed, how could I not like him? What’s not to like? He’s charming, witty, strong and, just a little handsome. She sighed with relief. I like him very much.

Oh, I’m so glad, she said, grabbing my hands and pulling me across the bed to her, I wasn’t worried about father, I mean, what father ever fully approves of any man who’s courting their daughter. I knew he would come around but, she stroked my hair and looked into my face, however, if you didn’t like him, I don’t think I could bear that.

Well, I said, you have nothing to worry about, I like him very, very much. She hugged me and laughed. I am so happy for you Addie, you deserve this more than anyone. She stopped hugging me, looked at me and began to cry. I hushed her, hugged her, rocked her in my arms. Be happy, Addie, I said, you’ve earned it.

Happy she was. Addie and Alexander were the hit at every party, the talk of all the salons, the picture of perfect bliss. Father was proud of her and he liked Alexander a great deal. Many nights he would come the house and play chess for hours with father, Addie having to pull him away to spend time with her. Father would argue good naturally, then watch them stroll the grounds.

What do you think, Tilly, he said to me on one of those evenings, he seems to make her happy, he seems to be quite taken with her. Will this young man take Addie from us, make her a wife.

I hope so, Addie so deserves to be happy.

Father looked at me with misty eyes, kissed my head and whispered, We all do, my darling girl, we all do.

    ***

Late fall, Alexander came to the house, I opened the door for him and smiled. He looked grim and serious.

Addie is in the library, there is a fire and cider, I told him and reached for his hand to take him there.

Is your father about, he asked in a hushed tone, I have come to speak to him. Father was in his office so I took Alexander there. I knocked on the door, father called for me to enter and I told him Alexander was here, wanting to see him.

To see me, he said, as surprised as I was when I opened the door, I do hope all is well. Show him in. I told him to go in, closed the door carefully and ran to the library where Addie was sketching.

Did you fight with Alex? I asked, and she looked up from her paper with a curious expression.

No, she said, almost laughing, we never fight, why do you ask?

Because he’s here, I told her, he didn’t want to come to the library, he wanted to speak to father. He was very serious. Addie put down her pencil and stood, she seemed suddenly worried. She paced a little.

What did he say, she asked, did he say he didn’t want to see me? Before I could answer father stepped into the library. He too, seemed serious and stern. I noticed Addie become more agitated.

Alexander has come, father said, he wishes to speak to you, he is in the garden.

Oh, Addie said and wrung her hands, then... then I shall got to him.

I think it best, father said and she moved quickly out of the room. I looked at father’s very stern face and I was worried as well.

Is everything well father, is everything well with Alexander? I watched as his stern face crack into a huge smile and he winked at me. He lead me quickly to the large windows that looked out over the garden.

We ducked on the sofa, looked out the windows, hiding, not wanting to be seen. Addie and Alexander were in the garden. We watched as she came to him, they spoke and then, Alexander was on one knee, holding a small box up to Addie. She brought her hands quickly to her mouth, she nodded her head so fiercely, he rose and took her in his arms and kissed her. Father reached over and covered my eyes.

Father, I said, I have seen boys and girls kiss before. He chuckled. We watched the two lovers hold each other and then, they came toward the doors.

Quickly, father said, look natural. He grabbed a book from a shelf and I picked up my needle work. A moment and Addie came busting into the room.

Father, oh, father, she shouted and he rose, hugged her and shook Alexander’s hand. She showed me the ring, it was so beautiful. I watched her flitting about, she looked so pretty, so bright, so very happy.

Well done, old boy, I said to Alexander and gave him a little punch on the arm, that caused everyone in the room to laugh hard.

A toast seems to be in order, father said and rang for Adams. He brought a tray of glasses, a bottle of fine champagne and we toasted many times to the happiness, the future, the love of Addie and Alexander. I drank too much champagne, got silly and fell asleep.

    ***

There was a party to announce and present. I had a new dress and Alexander danced with me twice. I was only two years younger than Addie, but I felt like a little girl when I watched them together, they were so adult, so mature. I wondered how she had gotten that way, what I had missed. I was very proud of Addie and I so liked Alexander. I thought of the future, Christmas times and birthdays, Alexander would be my big brother. He would be a good father and a good husband for my sister. There was nothing I wanted more, truly.

In three weeks time, they were married. Addie was gorgeous in her wedding dress. The service was short and just perfect. We returned to our house for the party. Father went all out. We had over sixty guests, food, wine, a huge cake and dancing deep into the night. I danced with some fine young men, drank wine and champagne but this time, I did not fall asleep. I was far too excited. Toward the end of the evening Addie asked me to come help her pack for the honeymoon. They were going to cruise on a ship to the continent and then spend time in France and Italy, it sounded so exotic to me.

Promise me you’ll send picture post cards, I said to her as I opened her trunk and saw that she was already packed, but, you’re ready, Addie, you’re all packed. She was sitting on the bed, she seemed upset. What’s wrong, I asked frightened for her, do you have second thoughts, do you not love Alexander?

No, she said, I love him very much and, of course I have no second thoughts. She got quiet and then rose and began to fuss with the things in her trunk. I’m just... nervous. She said in a quiet tone.

Do you think the ship may sink, I said, because that is so rare, they never do that...

No, she cut me off, not the ship. Oh how I wish mother was here, she said and collapsed on the bed. I sat with her and held her hand. I don’t know what to expect, you see.... Tonight, when we’re alone... in bed. I understood. Yes, I thought, what does one do, this would be a time when a mother would have been so helpful.

Addie, I said, after I thought for a long time, if you truly love Alexander, with all your heart, then you have nothing to fear. He will be kind, gentle and he will take care of everything.

Do you really think so, she asked, I do, Tilly, oh I do love him so.

Then everything will be just fine, I assured her. She smiled and I saw all her fears drift off. Think about how wonderful the trip will be, I said and she got more relaxed, more happy, and think of all the picture post cards you’re going to send. She laughed, promised and hugged me. She was happy again and that made my heart shine.

Alex had purchased the estate behind ours. A 20 minute walk through the field would bring us to their front door, or they to ours. A horse ride would be even quicker.

So, we will be gone for several months, Alexander said as he lifted Addie into the carriage, but when we return, we will be close. There were hugs and hand shakes, good wishes and then, they were off. I followed the carriage for a bit, waving and shouting my love and my prayers, but soon, I couldn’t keep up and I stopped, watched them go and said a little prayer for their safety and happiness.

    ***

Two weeks later I received the first letter from Addie. The ship was magnificent, the traveling was wonderful, the people she met aboard ship were wonderful. All was well. Except, she wrote; having a little problem with what we had spoken of before I left. I am sure it is nothing, but still...

I read those lines repeatedly. I wasn’t too concerned for Addie didn’t seem to be. The next letter, she sounded more worried. She spent time describing the land and the sites and more time fretting about the things that weren’t happening in the bedroom. She hinted that Alexander seemed frustrated. I would sit in the parlor and read the letters and father would ask me how things were. I would have to make up sections of their travels to tell him because, frankly, I didn’t think father needed to know about what was and what wasn’t happening in the bedroom of his eldest daughter.

The letters became slightly more desperate and, although I knew there was nothing I could do for her while she was away, I knew I needed to help her on her return. I loved Addie too much to have her be unhappy for such a trivial reason. Fate stepped in, as fate has a way of doing, stepping in or stepping on. Father had a business trip to take into the city and he decided to bring me along. I could shop and see the sites while he did business, in the evening we could see theater, eat at fine places, it sounded wonderful.

    ***

We arrived early in the day, checked into the magnificent hotel and father immediately had to dress and meet people to discuss business. I kissed his cheek, thanked him for bringing me, made plans on when and where to meet and set out to wander the busy streets. There were so many varied, beautiful shops.

I looked at the latest fashions, saw restaurants with menus that had more pages than some books I had read and then, I turned a corner and things seemed very different. Fewer people on this street, darker doorways. It was still mid day so I wasn’t frightened, but something told me this was a part of town that held treasures of a singular kind. I strolled down the street and came upon an old book shop. My love of books almost compels me to enter a book shop whenever I find one and this was no different.

I pushed the heavy door open and the smell of books, dust and age struck me as I walked in. The shelves were stacked in a very disjointed fashion. There were a few cats sitting about, cobwebs on the tops of shelves. The store had a very welcoming feeling however and I was very happy to spend as much time there as possible. I wandered the stacks, no one else seemed to be around and then, I came upon an older woman, sitting in a stuffed chair, reading a large tome. Cats jumped on and off her lap. She looked up at me and her face was soft like dough, her eyes sparkled kindness and I giggled.

Well, hello, pretty young lady, she said, standing up, aren’t you just a walking ray of sun’s light. I blushed, thanked her and she introduced herself.

Beatrice Clezner, she said, taking my hand, this is my shop and it’s my pleasure to have you here, would you like tea?

I accepted and we drank tea as we wandered the stacks. She told me about books and history. She had lived a wonderful life, was married, her husband was killed in the wars, she never married again because he was the love of her life. She loved books, took his pension and opened this shop.

Books that are hard to find, off the beaten path books... naughty books, she said and winked. I liked
