    DEDICATION

I dedicate this book to those apostolic leaders whose selfless labor of love has expanded the Kingdom of God, transformed lives, families, cities, nations, and mentored many Timothies and Tituses without strings attached. They are doing uncommon exploits around the world.

    ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

This book is the result of the efforts of my teachers, mentors, and leaders who invested their time, knowledge and friendship in me. I am grateful for the commitment of my family, staff, supporters, and for those who allowed me to learn how to lead with them.

Top among them is my wife, Chinyere Gloria Mosy Madugba, who is my reinforcement from heaven, and senior editor who plays numerous roles in my life. What can I do without you?

I am grateful for my late father Sir. John Madugba who created platforms for me to become a leader at a very young age. I am also thankful for uncle Dr. Dan Onwukwe who was the first to recommend me to Scripture Union (Nigeria) and to acknowledge me as a leader.

Thanks to the elders of Light Bearers Church who entrusted me with the challenging task of being their apostolic leader.

Thanks to my staff at the International Head Office and the God’s Glory House staff. Thanks to the members of Ministers Prayer Network family and her leaders.

Thanks to Dr. Juergen Buhler, President of the International Christian Embassy in Jerusalem, Israel for believing in me, and giving me the opportunity to serve in different capacities in this global ministry.

Thanks to Eddie and Alice Smith, friends of my wife and me for almost three decades, who volunteered to publish this book in United States shortly after it was published in Nigeria.

And to my cooperative and understanding children—Michael, the Commander; Michelle, Dad’s Baby-girl; and David, the Monarch. They have sacrificed some of their special time with me to allow me to do what I do.

I will remain forever grateful to each of you.

    INTRODUCTION

For years God has directed different people to encourage me to write a book on apostolic leadership.

I have read Acts of the Apostles in the Bible and several other books on apostolic ministry. However, I told myself I needed several years of practical experience in that position to be qualified to write on it.

In 1971 my father thrust me out into the mission field. Eleven years later I began pioneering spiritual and administrative leadership for people of different ages, and denominations for Scripture Union in Rivers State, Nigeria.

Ten years later I launched Spiritual Life Outreach, our ministry in Port Harcourt, Nigeria, which has provided the platform from which I started the Ministers Prayer Network, and other ministries.

I have been a student of apostolic leadership in the caring hands of the Holy Spirit and people who God has placed either over my life or across my path. The training has sometimes been torturous, full of twists and turns. Some of the experiences one wouldn’t wish on their worst enemies, and some have been gloriously fulfiling.

Presently, I provide apostolic covering and mentor-ship to over 2,000 leaders around the world. I mentor religious leaders, heads of states, governors, and mayors in U.S., in Nigeria, and several other nations. Many have watched me from afar, and others followed me closely for several years before they finally requested my spiritual covering and mentorship. Each of them has helped me grow into my calling and offices.

I count it a rare privilege to be asked by God to write this book. I pray that it will bless you. May you catch the fire-baptism, the Holy Spirit, the wisdom, faith, courage, and selflessness that equips apostles who lead the church around the world. To successfully pioneer anything, we must begin by becoming a godly person.

Commit yourself to acquire quality leadership and exceptional vocational life skills. Work to establish a good marriage (if you are married), to build a successful business, or to plant a vibrant ministry or church. Work hard, pray apostolic prayers, and carefully watch the company you keep. Read this entire book.

    CHAPTER ONE

    THE APOSTOLIC

The word apostolic refers to a dimension of operation or lifestyle that reflects the characteristics of Jesus’ twelve apostles and other apostolic people God has raised up in each generation since. An apostle, whether man or woman, is one who understands and believes in a cause and is faithfully, and passionately committed to it. He is therefore empowered and commissioned to go and represent the sending authority to carry out specified assignments or to pioneer or trail-blaze the same cause. He is simply one sent on a mission .

An apostle is also a person who initiates a great moral reformation or who first advocates an important belief or system. The first 12 commissioned leaders with Jesus Christ were called apostles, but beyond them, we find others like St. Paul, the apostle. In some church-denominations or organizations today, the highest ecclesiastical officials are called apostles. An apostle is a champion of a worthy cause. You will discover more about him as you read on.

Paul later explained that many others would be called to be apostles for as long as the church exists, we read in Ephesians 4:11.

And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ…

Therefore, God has raised, and still raises men and women to provide apostolic leadership. Apostolic leaders execute Kingdom projects, transform men and situations, inspire people to use their God-given potential to make positive a impact to affect generations. They are pacesetters for Kingdom lifestyle who leave unique footprints on the sands of time.

Such men and women carry apostolic anointing and grace. The apostolic anointing enables them to be proof-producers to manifest evidence of the power of God to their generation. It enables them to perform unusual miracles, signs, and wonders. They also carry a transforming grace that changes people’s lives, their circumstances, and destinies.

The Holy Spirit empowers apostolic leaders today to live Kingdom lives and enables them carry out Kingdom projects as He did in the ministry of the New Testament apostles. In Acts 4:33, we are told that it was with great power that they witnessed to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus and great grace was upon them all. Total reliance on and partnership with Him makes it possible to flow in the apostolic. He is our Mentor, Senior Partner, Helper, and Coach to carry out our Kingdom assignments.

    Apostolic Highlights

Today, a fresh grace is being released upon the Church to enable her replicate and accomplish even more than they did; which will be required to bring our generation back to God. This grace is also necessary to empower divinely elected men and women to remove the fake building materials that were used either by careless workers or hirelings in the past and to rebuild, restructure, reinforce, and restore her glory. (1 Corinthians 3:10) Below are some noticeable traits we see in the lives of Jesus’ early apostles, which the Church must key into to be restored to her rightful place.

    Early apostles were born again

They were born again and filled with the Holy Spirit. Jesus testified that all their names were written in heaven. "Nevertheless, do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rather rejoice because your names are written in heaven" (Luke 10:20).

Because they were born again, they could relate to and work with the Holy Spirit. That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit (John 3:6).

They spent quality time with Jesus.

They spent time with Christ and received adequate training in matters of the Kingdom. They listened to and watched Jesus demonstrate Kingdom principles, values, philosophy, and power. They learned as they watched Him pray apostolic, prophetic, warfare and breakthrough prayers.

They asked questions and received answers to their questions. They were involved in supervised fieldwork with observable results while Christ was with them. They made their mistakes, received His correction, and spiritually matured to be commissioned. They never admitted anyone into their inner circle who had not been through the same training. In Acts 1:21–26 we read:

Therefore, of these men who have accompanied us all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us, beginning from the baptism of John to that day when He was taken up from us, one of these must become a witness with us of His resurrection. And they proposed two: Joseph called Barsabas, who was surnamed Justus, and Matthias; And they prayed and said, You O Lord, who knows the hearts of all show which of these two You have chosen to take part in this ministry and apostleship from which Judas by transgression fell, that he might go to his own place. And they cast their lots, and the lot fell on Matthias, and he was numbered with the eleven apostles.

Therefore, it is invalid for a new Christian to introduce himself as an apostle.

The Holy Spirit Has a Controlling Position

Apostolic leadership is unique because God initiates it. Man is only a yielded instrument playing that role.

In apostolic decision-making, the Holy Spirit always has the upper hand, even in the highest apostolic ruling body in Jerusalem in the early church. "For it seemed good to the Holy Spirit (first), and to us (second), to lay upon you no greater burden than these necessary things that you abstain from things offered to idols…" (Acts 15:28).

When Peter confronted Ananias and his wife Sapphira for lying, he rebuked them saying, "Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit (not to Peter) and keep back part of the price of the land for yourself" (Acts 5:3-4)?

How did Peter know the actual amount received from the sale of the land? The Holy Spirit must have revealed it to Him. We refer to that as a word of knowledge, mentioned in 1 Corinthians 12:8. It is the ability to know something that cannot be known naturally. Had Peter not been given that revelation, he would have never known. So, the Holy Spirit’s guidance is required for authentic apostolic leadership.

    Apostolic, Earth-Quaking, Ground-Shaking Prayer

Prayer continues to be the spiritual master key that opens every shut door in the spirit. The apostles taught their followers to pray. The New Testament Church was born, and the Holy Spirit first received at a prayer meeting in the upper room.

Intense prayer was the number one item on the early apostles’ agenda. In Acts 6:4, we read where they pledged to give themselves continually to prayer and the ministry of the Word.

Here, in Acts 6:3-4, is what they said about the challenge of distraction by social services, in this case, their ministry to widows:

"Therefore brethren seek out from among you seven men of good reputation, full of the Holy Spirit and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this [social] business; but we will give ourselves continually to prayer…"

The apostles were people of prayer. Apostolic prayers are powerful and impactful, Kingdom extending prayers that shake people, places, and things. We see an example of powerful prayer here in Acts 4.

"And when they had prayed, the place where they were assembled together was shaken, and they were all filled [drunk] with the Holy Spirit, and they spoke the Word of God with boldness" (Acts 4:31).

The result was that they became intoxicated with the Holy Spirit and a new boldness, power, and unction came upon them all.

In Acts 12:5, when they had prayed, an angel came down and physically opened the iron gates. In Acts 16:25-39 we read of Paul and Silas, imprisoned in Philippi. They prayed apostolic prayers, and God sent a physical earthquake that destroyed their chains, their stocks, opened their cells, and set them and the other prisoners free. When the apostles prayed, infirmities were healed, and the dead were raised! (Acts 9:36-42)

    Quick Answers to Prayers

God is anxious to manifest His agenda on the earth. The prayer momentum of the season we are in today will be stronger than it was ten years ago. God is answering prayers speedily when we call upon Him in spirit and in truth. As we give Him His rightful place, His presence will be tangibly felt in His Church. It’s an exciting day in which we live. Prayers that ordinarily took a week, a month, or one year before God answered them, are receiving His immediate attention today.

When apostolic women prayed in Acts 12, the prison gates opened of their own accord. When Peter walked out of the prison gates, the angel took him to the praying people whose prayers had opened the gates for him. Apostolic grace makes one pray and sing in a way that shatters prison doors and breaks chains.
