That was an amazing dinner, I say, leaning over and giving Derek a kiss after the waiter clears our dessert plates. Can I ask what I did to deserve such a fancy meal?

Derek gives me a dazzling smile and then a kiss, and shakes his head. No particular reason. I just wanted to treat my stunning wife.

I squeeze Derek’s hand, though I don’t believe him. I know something’s up because Derek has been extra nice to me the past week. It’s not like he treats me badly – far from it – but he’s been incredibly attentive and this meal was decadent. After fifteen years together, our marriage isn’t all fireworks and high passion any longer. We’ve fallen into familiar routines and built a normal life. House in the burbs, mortgage, solid careers, barbecues with the neighbors on holiday weekends. It’s a predictable, happy life that makes me happy, but I can’t help but wonder if Derek isn’t happy.

I’m not sure I should have had that last glass of port, I say, giggling as we stumble in our front door. I normally don’t drink very much and it’s been ages since I’ve been even a little drunk.
